5er vs TAG vs Moho - it’s about towablity and non-OHV fun too

There is no one size fits all or perfect set-up that works for everyone. It depends on your situation and what you are trying to do. My only real option is a Moho and trailer for dunes and similar as I have to haul too much chit. None of my family wants to be a passenger, everyone wants something to drive. No way to fit it in a toy hauler. If I ever get to a situation where I could use a TH I would seriously consider it for the advantage of having a vehicle to get around. Then again, with the Moho, I do not have to stop unless I need fuel or if I have to take a leak, this saves lots of stops  :classic_biggrin:

We sold our 40 ft 5th wheel after 17 years this season, honestly it was pretty much perfect for the desert, it was getting older, but was in perfect condition, really no complaints.

we wanted to do more river stuff and just go camping without toys, hard to do it all with one rig. Big fifth wheel doesn’t work at some campgrounds or beaches Also wanted to flat tow the jeep on occasion

But we do more trips racing than desert or river so this played the biggest factor. Last year we raced in Missouri 3x and the long travel and hotels sucked on us, the dog and the crew. To get our stuff to races took 2 trucks and 2 trailers.

we went with a used toter home and a 40 ft liftgate stacker, approx 72 ft. We also order a new toter that will arrive next year. This summer we will know better how our decision plays out. Now we have a real truck that can tow a big trailer, we can take both race cars plus support vehicles all in one truck and trailer. Between the truck and trailer we have plenty of space, plenty of water (210 gallons) holding tanks are the weakness at 50 gallons.

we will also be buying a gooseneck flatbed so we can take jeep and side x side to desert instead of the stacker, this will also keep us at or about legal length.

I kept one dually in case I change my mind again which happens daily
My old Boss was a drag racer. Raced two cars each weekend and had a big Toter ( It was actually Exotica1's old Toter)  and Stacker. He had one of the new Fiats he could put in the stacker just so when he got to the track he could go out to dinner, run across town or go sightseeing.

The ONLY perfect set-up is the one that suits your needs, budget, storage requirements and level of comfort.

Someday I'll figure it out for myself, until then I just Rent :oll:

Lot's a good info here on what suits folks and why. :thumb:

We downsized from a 36’ 5er(Raptor) to a 28’ 5er Genesis 28CR and are very happy with it! It allows us to fit the Wildcat XX and kids dirt bikes. But also made it much easier to slide into the state parks. I prefer having the truck, for running into town, emergencies, and not having to borrow someone’s else’s truck. View attachment 31051
Yup I have an old (cheap) 28ft WW and my wife tows our 16 foot box with the 2nd razor.

Works great… nice to have the shorter 5th than my 25 foot bumper TH that I sold.

you get the nice private master up off the ground higher, tip to tail I have 3 feet more living space rig and 5 feet shorter length. Great for getting into small spots in Mammoth, etc.

Best,

AT the dunes both are nice,  I rent my truck out at the dunes for $10 a Minute, seems fair,

I am not one to barrow a truck, and when people do, something is always off with it, So you Moho guys all us fithers that let you barrow the truck with a smile deeps down inside we are like F@ck someone is F@cking up our money's,

Anyone that has a Truck and does not feel like that is a is full of BS,

A lot of 5thers dont unhook there truck and sacrifice leveling there trailer because they dont want people to ask them,

The next Gooseneck hitch on the trailer is going to look like a ATM machine,

What more funny is when these same people brake down, in the dunes and want to use your truck also,

MHO put a $100 or 2 in your wallet and when you barrow a truck just leave it in the glove box for your buddy and text him after the weekend is over and tell him thank you, so he does not feel bad,
Word I never un-hitch the dually. The suburban is way superior for recovery of another truck or sand rail.

Towed my buddy’s broken HEAVY X-5 Buckshot with my stock 05 burb.. 4 low, PSI to 15 .. at least 10 miles away from Gecko… took longer to find him than it did to tow out…

… oh and use 3 30’ tow ropes so when he’s going up a dune you’re already going downhill in the tow vehicle…

Makes it easy.

i just sold my 30' warrior pull behind and im selling my 05 duramax to step into a 2002-2006 or so monaco DP.  First time going down the RV route as ive always had trailers.  Hopefully i like it.  Thanks for all the advice in this thread.  At the end of the day nothing is perfect and there is always a "better" setup.  just gotta figure out what works for your gear and toys and run it.

I agree, i am going to weld the hitch on next trip and just cut it off at the house, LOL

I converted mine from 5th to goose neck. Heard it was stronger and it doesn't take up any bed space.. more for wood, gas cans, etc.

That is so you can carry more wood for the Moho Guys, LOL  (you got a truck right, -Yes-, can you pick up some wood, -I guess-, -how much are you bringing-, non i dont want to put it in my enclosed trailer,  LOL

I fill the 8’ bed… no one else brings wood.

Usually enough for 5/6 day trip.

PS. Been that way for years. Yup all my buddies are too loaded … 🤦‍♂️

I did the switch from a F450 and 37' WW to a 2005 36' Moho and 24' box trailer, for the sole purpose to use more than the desert.  What I really like is the storage, The moho fits all the chairs, barbeque, and everything I need for camping.  With the Toy hauler, I was unloading and loading everything every trip.  I was also the last one to get out of camp every trip because you can't load up your toys ( non Garage) until all the family gets out of bed and the trailer is cleaned up.  I love having the Box trailer as my garage to work on things and packing up the night before.  And when the weather (especially rain) is bad, I can park the car in the box trailer and it doesn't impact anything.  I was able to make the switch with zero money out of pocket.

The only negative for me, the F450 and 5th wheel drove like a dream at any speed or wind vs the Moho.

Just got back from Dumont, and The only thing is the trailer is a 2016 but really built like crap compared to a Moho,  but a fraction of the price if you buy new,  the toy hauler is new,

in the wind the other moho guys drove under the speed limit on the freeway, 70-MPH, they did about 60-65 we did 80 with not even a peep from the trailer, like it was not there,

It was a Day and a half trip, and doing so, i locked the hitch and left the Key, at the house, did not want to disconnect, first thing when i got there, someone was, Can you pull me out,

Nope, dont got the key,  (could have cut the lock) but for a day trip, was not going to unhook,  But was nice still, I let them use my shovel

The drive and ride quality of a Moho will vary widely depending on model and chassis. Some can be white knuckle for sure. Some of the class c and even pusher's can be challenging. My previous Super C on the Kodiak 5500 drove easily but the ride quality was marginal and it felt top heavy around corners even with super springs and a trac bar. My current Super C on the Freightliner M2 chassis is fabulous in handling and ride quality with no modifications. Even with strong cross winds it is easy to drive and keep in my lane. I think the big difference comes from longer wheelbase and much bigger wheels and tires along with the rear air ride. And I'm sure the heavier weight helps too, especially with winds.

^^^ THIS!! We went from a 38'5er toy hauler to a 35' super C (Kodiak 5500) then to a 40' diesel pusher. The super C was awful, ride quality and handling was SKETCHY! The 40' DP is soooooooo much better to drive with the long wheelbase, air suspension and 22.5" big tires. I'm still on the fence re the moho tho, it's nice and all but the cost to own and operate vs a truck/trailer is dramatically different and it's always in the back of my mind. Oh and you're still driving a house in an earthquake no matter what moho it is.

In reality, i would think the Moho is way better built then a Trailer,  my Trailer is not that old and so many issues,  I work/maintain it ever time i take it out,  My trailer is just not built very well, and the components that makes all the issues is LIppert, and all the frames and doors are the same Lippert junk,

At the end of the day, a Moho make the best sense,

Simple answer for me

My wife and I can't share the same space. My stacker is loaded with parts as we like to keep customers running on weekends ..hence work area

Motorhome I am only allowed to S&S  even then I am only allowed in the my bathroom ,it's a bath and a half model.

Is this where i call her a BITCH lol
