3.0L Duramax - MiniMax

My buddy bought a 2022 at4 uses it to tow his 20’ box trailer with rain gutter equipment. Says it tows it great, gets 30mpg when not towing. Im thinkin hard on one of these to replace my wagon and truck as a daily driver. But 70-80k$ is hard to swallow
20k cheaper than the 3/4 ton version.

No issue towing 9k? That’s about what my 26’ enclosed weighs and I didn’t even think it was a possibility. It would be nice to save 20k over a 3/4 ton.
Yeah no issues- I have a 2006 LBZ (lifted, re-geared and on 38's)- With the same trailer I can hold the same speeds up grades in the baby duramax as the LBZ. I'd say overall I prefer to tow it with the 3.0- its just more comfortable. The only advantage of the bigger truck is its weight- on turns and bumps you feel the trailer a little more in the smaller truck- but not by much. I think the 10 speed transmission plays a big role in it too. Huge improvement over the 6 speed.

Do you have the NFT?

Longevity is my main concern when talking gas vs. diesel.  As we all know, any emissions intact new diesel just has more systems that can fail over the life of the vehicle.  Now, if you plan on trading it in every 2 to 3 years then buy the diesel as it does have benefits over the gas truck and you'll keep it under warranty.  If you plan on keeping the truck long term, outside of the factory warranty then I would go with a gas option.

I know this is backwards of any traditional gas vs. diesel discussion but that how you have to look at with today govt and laws.  Most of us want the diesel but not many will pay to properly delete the truck nor do we want to be harassed when it comes to other warranty issues, registration or being hassled by police or DOT who looks at your truck a little too closely.  The gas motor has it's issues too in regard to lifters and the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system but IMO they are easier to address and we all know how much abuse an LS motor will take.

I would personally love to delete my new L5P, not for power, just so the motor would run cleaner and not continuously build up soot.  But when I looked into it, no aftermarket shop will touch it and it's a black market deal to get it done anymore at the tune of $10k plus.  No thanks.

Dream crusher!

Still trying to decide if I want to sell my 2013 with 68k on it,,,,,,,

I’m not comfortable towing my box with my 1500. I’ll tow the single axle flat bed but not my box. It’s not that it doesn’t have the power, just the brakes on 1500s are too small IMO.

Incredible numbers for such a small motor.

Chevy has a brake upgrade that I was considering but not sure its worth it, wouldn't be towing the box trailer much.

If I had a clean, low miles no issues truck to begin with, I would have never upgraded.  The new trucks are way too expensive.  Don't get me wrong the creature comforts are nice and all.....

I came from an 05 Silverado w/ 5.3 that had 230k on the clock.... so the upgrade was much needed.  That truck was on its last leg.

I hear ya, I can buy a lot of fuel at 16-17mpg and keep driving what I have but the thought of driving a 1/2 ton w/30mpg back n forth is tempting

I had a 2004.5 Silverado 2500 HD duramax and after 14 years, 239K miles...that thing still ran like a champ. But I thought..this thing will probably start giving me issues?

Why not get something new and reliable! well, my 2018 Dmax was a dud! Had that thing been good, no way I'd have my 2024. Prices are effing ridiculous!

The ride of the 1/2 ton is nice, the new features are all very nice.  I wouldn't let the MPG's be the deciding factor as you pay a huge premium to get there lol

@matt86m

you get everything registered in AZ yet? The registrations on new vehicles is absurd. Can’t imagine what it would be on that nee Duramax.

New diesel makes me nervous. Get acquainted with the check engine light and your service manager. The 3 of you will be together a lot.
