Some dos and don’t in Glamis…

Do NOT dune alone!
Avoid Sand Hwy when possible. Lots of traffic, inexperienced riders/drivers and prone to accidents
Paddle tires big time plus
Don’t drive straight up & over the dunes - make a smooth arch over the top of ridge to transition into next dune so can see. 👀
Have a light up flag/whip 8ft tall.
Don’t jump without spotters!
California law you need helmets for SxS. ⛑️
Take your trash with ya!!!
Watch for Dirt Bike Riders📣
Drive defensively
Destination points park safely in gear & to not get stuck.
Bring small shovel, tool kit and tow strap
Watch for kids playing in dunes- they lay down or roll down dunes- ride small quads and bushes can hide them. 👀
Don’t follow too close. Emergency situations happen.
Know Ranger Station number 760-344-3919
Always watch what’s out ahead of you or coming from the sides. Can be traffic out there especially around destination points.
No super sharp gun it turns - you will roll. 😖😁
Learn which & where super soft sand hills are- so you know how to drive basically.
Watch out for Witcheyes! They will swallow you up.
Know your boundaries points-
Learn the land, incase you lose your GPS.
Don’t drive above your abilities just to look cool.
Don’t forget your season or weekly permit for your street legal vehicle.
Don’t forget your Fire Permit
Follow camp speed limits and be a courtesy camper. 👍🏻

Destination points park safely in gear & to not get stuck.

A good way to do that (really anywhere you stop) is to park so that you are pointing straight downhill on a downslope. Gravity is your friend in this case. This is not always intuitive to everyone..
 
A couple of things I would add to the great list above.
Carry a First Aid Kit.
Carry a Fire Extinguisher or Fire Blanket.

dune alone! The peace and tranquility is the Ultimate feeling
Speed - Open it up on Sand Hwy when possible. riders/drivers will be impressed with your showmanship !
Knobbies (Heaver the better - Really demonstrates you know how to drive out there !)
Ride Fast and Jump straight up & over the dunes - make a smooth arch over the top of ridge and SEND IT !!👀
Have a light up flag/whip 8ft tall that can double as a destination Stripper Pole !
Don’t jump around camp Buffets - You dont wanna "spill the Beans !"
Ignore California law that you need helmets for SxS. Having your hair flow in the wind just is the BEST
Bring your trash from home with ya!!! The Dumpsters are there for dumping - I even bring my yard waste - saves $$ at your local dump
Watch the Dirt Bike Riders - They are the nicest duners out there - Roll up on em and let them know you have seen Crusty Demons of Dirt 📣
Drive it like you Stole It
Destination points Rule - Get there - Jump out of whatever you rode and race your friends to the destination point - Then Live Stream yourself !
Bring small shovel, You can burry a lot of "Problems" out in the dunes
Watch for kids playing in dunes- Offer them Ice Cream and candy to wash your Toy Hauler and Sand Car back at camp -nothing beats Cheap Labor. 👀
Follow close. You don't wanna lose your friends out there (it also pushes them to go faster - Its sand for Gods sake - what could possibly go wrong
Know Ranger Station number 760-344-3919 - Call every hour or so and say "Is your Refridigritor Running ??"
Always watch what’s out ahead of you or coming from the sides. This is the best way to see if people are watching and noticing your savage Driving Style
super sharp turns and gun it This is how the Funco Crowd Rolls😖😁
Learn which & where super soft sand hills are- Those are the best places to stop your car or SXS and just Relax
Watch out for Witches! There are a lot of very Unfriendly women out there
Know your point when explaining yourself to the Rangers - helps avoid confrontations
Learn the land by "Using The Force" - Once in a while - Shut your eyes and just let it go !
drive above your abilities just to look cool. That is why you are out there for heavens sake
Eff a season pass or weekly permit - Its BLM land and you shouldn't pay a dime ! Let the Rangers know your stance on this issue!
Don’t forget when a LEO asks for your Fire Permit.........say " We don't need no stinkin Permit !"
be a courtesy camper by only playing Mariachi Music till 2am - anything after that is not right ! 👍🏻

Those are great ones to add. Totally forgot about those even though we carry them.

When we went to yosemite a month ago, we stopped at McDonald's for coffee and breakfast for the road...

There was a F150 truck parked along side us with a quad and dirtbike. The guys were inline behind us, so I started talking to them....where you off too, etc.

Glamis.

Wow, cool...ever been there before? Nope.

I was floored these 2 guys, musta been 19 at best literally loaded their bikes and were headed out on a 4 hour drive to a place they never been to before.

I answered a bunch of questions they didn't even know they needed to ask. My sons also chimed in..amazing how little they knew..which was nothing aside from Google mapping it.

Thread like this is good, we know...but many have zero clue.
 
I actually told these guys to go camp next to the beach store and he asked me if they had anti-freeze at the beach store...
I said, yeah, i'm sure they do why? you need some for your quad?

And he said, no, for my truck...

Go across the street to Autozone...lol

Darwin doesn't even have to look where to throw darts...targets are everywhere 😒

1000CC and under. >1000CC (like the ProR) are not required but recommended.

-Tire pressure: Less is more. Flotation is key. Most vehicles operate in the dunes ~8-12PSI. Especially true for your street vehicles that could be anywhere between 35-90PSI: if you start to get stuck STOP and air down. The Beach Store (in the back), the Ranger Station (along the fence of Gecko Road), and Gilmore's (vendor row along highway 78 during the season) all have free air.

Sadly, the same assholes that trash Glamis, play loud music all hours of the night and are general dicks, decide to invite their friends out who then replicate that behavior. Too many of social media outlets and youtube highlight this shit behavior and people tend to think its the normal way to act out there.

I think when first timers come out, they need to be humble and open to learning the landscape and respect of the desert.

Crusty - good points for sure. I will say - I first went in 1989 - young and looking back, pretty clueless about Glamis and the dunes. We did have common sense, some intelligence, standard courtesy to others, basic instincts on safety and what not to try until we learned. We didn't have google to easily look up what we should know. We were too lazy to research details but smart enough to learn on our own.

All this said - we all have to start somewhere and sometime. With common sense and courtesy to others - newbies are not a real issue. I was also very fortunate to meet folks and get educated by some that had been doing it for much longer. The real challenge is so many don't have common sense, respect and courtesy to others.
