Good morning everyone,

Recently my ebox started making this whining noise, in the video you an hear it best in 3rd gear but does it in all gears, let off the throttle and ir goes away, only under acceleration load. It was refreshed a year ago when i broke 3rd gear soon after buying the car.

I yanked the trans and had it gone through, reverse gear replaced, 1-2 slider hub replaced, and the small pinion bearing replaced. Reinstalled this weekend and the noise is still there.

Am I being a hypocondriac or does this sound bad? In the video, about 30 seconds in, in 3rd gear, you can hear it most pronounced.

I'd be yanking it back out and sending it off to a different trans builder. That howl is only going to get worse until something breaks.

Thats my fear, it has about an hour run time on it since i put it back in,

Any opinion what it might be? Trans builder said seems like maybe ring and pinion but saod it looked good when it was apart.

I'd guess bearings. But that's really just a guess. I wouldn't take it back to the guy that put it back together and didn't notice what was wrong.

Ring n pinion IMO

On deceleration, the pinion is forced away. Bet the measurements are off, bearing races moved away or the pinion nut is loose.

@SeanRitchie what you say.

Not sure why the large bearing near the Nose Cone was not replaced,
If you can get the nose cone off, a lot of time that is the issue,
you can weld a socket and pull it out with a slide hammer, and then put back the nose cone,

Dumb question, is that on the main shaft or pinion? I don't really know the inner workings of these (no plans to try and do it myself, just curious LOL)

I would bet it is this. My E-Box before I had the nose cone upgrade done to it had that bearing go bad.

I would guess main shaft bearing. They need to be replaced every time that tranny is opened up. Lots of load on them.

Thanks for the input, it was replaced a year ago when it was refreshed, but not this last time surprisingly.

^^^ not sure the torque/HP numbers on your engine, but a tranny guy told me years ago, never lug the motor, it destroys bearings. You think you are being easy on the tranny, but it puts a lots of pressure on the main shaft bearing. RPMs are your friend.

Interesting, not something I have heard or thought about. But anything that i can do to help a mendeola live longer would be sweet LOL. once rolling you really only need 3rd gear for the sand dunes in michigan, though that it is at low rpm at the top of hills etc., but I try to prevent shifting more than I have to as well for fear of breaking stuff.

You don't want to stay in the same gear all of the time if you can help it. From what I understand, it heats up that gear and it will wear out faster.

Sounds to me like there could be some gears rubbing.

There are some pretty tight tolerances between 2nd/3rd gears, as well as the reverse gear to 2nd.

The mainshaft (input shaft) moves towards the front of the trans under acceleration, and the pinion stack moves backwards. An E-box and 2D use shims on the mainshaft to ensure there is enough room between 2nd and 3rd gears so that they do not touch. Based on the noise getting louder with acceleration, this seems likely to me.

I would talk to your trans builder and see if he's willing to take another look at it in the shift jig right after he yanks it out of the case. This way they can check it before tearing it all the way apart and not finding anything wrong visually.
