Well after sitting idle for four years (billet parts)

So butt plug aside my son has been taking a fusion 360 class in the afternoons.. today I told him to draw the the spacer we need to go between his silencer and his ar15..

So here is the problem the silencer screws down on the barrel and has nothing to butt against.. so it just runs to the end of the threads on the silencer.

Here is the issue..

And here is the solution! Pretty proud of him to be able to take a class and even though it’s a simple part draw it himself..

I have no idea how to use cad but will start learning early next week. I was a manual machinist that worked off of paper drawings.. I’m that old

Are the relief cuts in the silencer there to allow airflow? You may be blocking that. I know less than zero on nugs and only slept on the floor of a dirty rv last night. so i have no clue if thats an issue.

The reliefs are there so you can use a spanner wrench to tighten it on the gun, or disassemble the silencer itself.. it’s kind of a weird design actually.

I need a surface grinder bad!

Found a few old ass six-twelve deluxe units in Pomona, but they still want $2500+ for them. Was hoping to find something $1500 or less.

Was going to call you one day when I needed to surface down a pinion depth spacer for an Albins, but figured you might be annoyed since it was 10:30 at night. LOL

I am always around to help if ya need it!

So I grew up machining when I was a kid.. later I went off to be an injection mold maker and after a few years got into sales of rapid prototyping (SLA etc).. Anyhow I have had these machines my entire life and will be teaching my kids how to machine etc..

It wasn’t a big deal because I kept them in my garage and had a phase converter etc.. well four or so years ago I got a shop in Havasu and moved all my machines there to free up my garage space, and then I purchased a surface grinder just because I always wanted one.. A friend of mine had a running machine shop and he passed away.. :(. His favorite machine he did all his prototyping on was this Haas VF 2 that’s loaded.. 12,000 rpm through spindle coolant, probe you name it it’s got it. So when he passed I bought it because I didn’t want to see it go down the road. . this would pretty much complete my little hobby shop.

And so it sat for four years and I never even so much as turned the surface grinder or the CNC on..

Well my lease just renewed and the rent went up so now I gotta put these things to work to justify the extra expense.

I prefer smaller custom the more complicated the better style jobs but am pretty much open to anything..

What would you make? We can make just about anything and if it pencils I’m not scared of buying a machine for a job.

Reminds me of being back in high school! The good old days of machining. Mill, lathe, grinder, band saw, etc... We did machine work, foundry stuff, welding, sheet metal, etc..

Impressive. Maybe toss a Chamfer on that thread?

In other news I spent about six hours grinding in the vice on my grinder yesterday.. I discovered I am way to old for this shit.. I literally hurt everywhere lol.

I need to put that thing in some kinda riser or something if I’m gonna be doing any kinda of long grinding work in the future.

setup a comfy chair or pad to stand on. Just like tig welding, you gotta be comfortable first.
