Who introduced you to the Glamis Sand Dunes?

I was in elementary school, about the 5th grade and my dad told me we are going to spend Thanksgiving in the Sand Dunes. For the whole week? He said no, just the weekend after turkey….Glamis here we come, who knew it would become what it has to us from there on out.

His co-worker, an older gentleman he worked with at Cal-Trans was an avid high desert off-roader, and simply a sand dune nut. Old Willie raised 5 boys and a daughter all alone; he lost his wife at a young age and had this huge active family to bring up. When we met them, they were all seasoned riders in their early 20s that had spent their youth riding all over southern California, most of the time being split between Honda Valley and the Glamis Sand dunes. His family was a great group of people, most of them were firefighters, EMT or police. Willie always said, keeping his boys busy riding dirtbikes was the greatest thing he could ever do to keep them out of trouble.

We loaded up the 2 old ATC110s we bought from Willie, his boys were all already on ATC250r’s, these were their older ATC’s that nobody used anymore. So, we loaded them in the back of my Dads Chevy Cheyenne truck with little else besides beer, sodas, and chips. We drove down there alone, they had already left a couple days before, that drive alone was an adventure, I recall a blown tire issue in Indio, CA. WTF are we now? Felt like another world already.

We get to Gecko, drove up and down the road looking for them, finally heard “Hey Manny” …from an old guy (looked like Santa Claus) sitting shirtless drinking a Coors in camp. We camped at what I later learned was called “the Keyhole”. I recall seeing the huge worm track, thought that it looked crazy, who could drive that and not crash…hah, the dunes nearby seemed unreal.

We set up our camp, which means we parked the truck next to his Motorhome and unloaded our two ATC110s. There was not much else to set up or put out, I don’t even recall if we had an extra can of gas LOL. Willie did hand us two ATV Flags; they had a few extras.

Willie then gave my dad and I the talk…
+ If you can’t start it, you can’t ride it.
+ Top off the gas before you go.
+ Never ride alone.
+ No Helmet, no ride.
+ Don’t go straight over any dunes, go sideways.

That was it, we officially knew everything we needed to know…LOL

My dad and I putted around the camp area for a while, sand here was different from White Water, which is where we first went riding. Sand here was so smooth and flowy, it seems endless. The worm track was a blast, I quickly learned to stay on the throttle and keep the momentum up, otherwise I found myself at the bottom of the ditch. We drove over the canal as well, this place was so amazing, I hadn’t even seen a dune yet up close on my ATC.

Willie and his boys were the greatest hosts, food was shared, laughs were had and many great moments even just sitting at the campfire. These guys could ride! My dad took them up on a guy’s ride, he borrowed an ATC200X that someone just bought, he dumped it somewhere, cause the jokes that weekend about it never ended HAH. Willie told me, start it, you can ride it…here around camp. I did, what an insane difference from my ATC110.

Eventually we “tickled” the edges of the dunes, finding some of the smaller areas where our ATC110s could have some fun, yes, we got stuck, aired down our tires, and learned momentum was our buddy. We were hooked, when is the next trip was asked the whole weekend.

I don’t recall it being chaos for a thanksgiving weekend, but then of course I was in such wonderment, I didn’t see much past what was right in front of me. We did a few more trips alone with Willie and his boys, then started gathering more stuff of our own and bringing along, more of our own family members.

I’m thankful for old Willie, that saw his friend Manny trying to find a connection, a hobby to share with his stepson that was having a rough time. That gesture helped us connect; my stepdad simply now became dad and a lifetime of memories followed.

Thanks Willie (RIP long ago), and thanks dad.

Share your story, who it was that invited you, took you or in general infected you with the love of Glamis?
Where did you camp, what did you ride, how did that first trip go?

I knew of Glamis probably since Jr. High. First trip to the dunes was Gordon's when a college friend invited me for T-day.

My sisters Dad, Wade Prescott (Allied Swiss owner).

His son is Chip Prescott (Prescott Racing, Precision One, Masa Tool).

In 1984, he took us to Glamis for my first time as we had grown up on 70's and 110's. We camped right off the road, across from Keyhole Campground...

That was the first time I had ever seen a red ATC 70. A kid pulled up and pointed at me on my Brother's Christmas Edition and said, "You have a Blue one!" I said, "You have a red one!"

Chip ate shit as he always does on the dune behind camp... hit a bush and broke his collar bone. Dude can't stop from crashing, to this day.

My friend Greg introduced me to Glamis while I was living in San Diego in 2004. He had a built Banshee (hill shooter) and a 250R he got from his dad. He'd drive out from CO and stay overnight at my place in Phx., before I moved to SD. So I'd seen the bikes and heard the stories.

My first trip, he'd convinced me meet him for the weekend of his first trip of the season. Drove out Friday after work and wired a headlight to the 250R for my first (night) ride in the dunes.

Later that season, he broke his wrist on the Banshee and couldn't make the next trip. So I invited him to hang out in PB for the weekend instead. Which led to him moving out of CO and becoming my roommate. I bought his 250R and we made regular trips to Gordon's Well.

My brother-in-law invited me and my wife for New Years 1999. Stayed in his motorhome and he brought quads for us to ride. I rode Yamaha Blaster and beat to crap Honda 250r. Parked on Gecko that trip. Met what turned out to be the main Glamis group I have been camping with for the last 26 years.

My brother-in-law stopped going to Glamis 4 years ago.

Pre-1999 not sure if I was aware..
Post 1999 we bought our first dune buggy Prowlers Sand Sprite and only went to Pismo Oceano Dunes
Met a ton of people and were told tales of Dumont and Glamis.
4-5 Dumont trips 2002-2006, then all the trips starting in 06 were Dumont
2006 Bought our first toy hauler and 2-weeks later made the first trip to Glamis, GLORIOUS and broke everything. Epic trip
2006 Oregon Dunes
2008 Glamis and Idaho
2018 last trip to Oceano for the Old School Buggy event
2024 Sand Hallow

1970 something my dad and a couple of his Firefighting buddies took the body off a VW bug and put an manx body on it. Then my dad and his Firefighter buddies and my grandfather and his firefighting buddies all met in Pismo. All I remember is mom and dad going out on a ride in the Manx the belt breaking and they had to walk back, Mom was not happy and never went back to the dunes the Manx was off gone right after we got home. That and Grandpa and his buddy riding around on Trail 90's in cut off shorts, no shirts and cowboy hats with a boda bag full of wine. Stopping at the top of a hill and pouring the wine into their mouths from arm's length.

Fast forward 20 some years. I was working with a guy who every Thanksgiving would go to Buttercup. He had a 350X and a 200X. One day in early summer we both got laid off. He asks me if I want to go riding. We take the trikes out to 107th and Camelback and ride for most of the day. At one point we are in this gravel pit and he says follow me. up and around a bid bowl we go. After he says, if you liked that you're going to love the dunes. That Thanksgiving we went I rode that 200X all over Buttercup.

1976 I had a ATC 90 built by Big Al @ Lemon Grove Honda. My cousin Andy Henson took me to Glamis with his friends who had VW and Corvair buggies. Comp hill was really steep and people rode all night long. Next trip was Thanksgiving and I brought my girlfriend (now Wife). We have been going ever since. It sure has changed

Our group Built all their own buggies from mostly my dads Garage and Pismo was the main place late 60's early 70's they all went. In 1974 a friend of a guy in our group said you guys need to go to Glamis and try it out, The entire group left together and went ended camping basically were the store is Now right off the Highway. I was 3 years old and the rest is History.

Girlfriend from high school took me there the first time. Circa 1987 not sure how many times we went together but she was put on the back burner for awhile before she got fired from that position permanently in 1989 or 1990.

Probably 79 or 80? First time was with Bro inlaw and sis. They had a group they went with and we tagged along. I bought a Honda 110 and off we went. Slept in the back of my truck with a shell on it. Added a KLT 200 for me and the 110 became the girlfriend at the time. Now my wife of 41+ years. Went for a few years and kinda fell into the family life, working construction, and fishing. Went a few times in between riding in the desert. Then got my car in 2010 and been going ever since.

Someone can chime in the year of the 110? Pic is from Azusa Canyon.

Had to tow my buddies truck home. Uhaul bumper tow hitch rented from Brawley. He blew the pressure plate out dumping the clutch down shifting to get up Comp Hill. That was fun towing him out of the hill hole to!

Late to the party. Growing up my parents loved to camp, boating, fishing and traveling. None of which included Motorsports. I wasn't missing what I didn't know. Enjoyed all of the trips we made and can't say we had a bad life.
As a young adult on my own, I was brought in to help on a top fuel drag boat. Being a mechanic it was an easy yes from me and I enjoyed everything that came from that team. My friend and his family owned the racing program and we were in the same commercial complex as I was working in. This grew into a greater friendship and I was introduced to dirt bikes and motocross tracks. So i went down to the Yamaha dealer and bought the best 450 dirt bike they had. $69.00 a month payments was ez and picked up all the safety gear. Off we went to a local track and got some seat time with him showing me the ropes as well as showing off. A few months into this he says pack your shit, we're going to Glamis.
This puts me into gear to find another rim, paddle tire, and some better goggles. Timeline is foggy but it's early 2000's. We camp in the washes and it was wash 10. We hit olds, the drags, Boardmanville, under the tracks of course, and the dunes. The riding kicked my ass thru the dunes. Lots of eff this, lots of fn awesome, lots of falls, lots of fun and out of all of it I couldn't figure out how he knew where we were going and how we got back to camp.
I fell in love with it all. Wanted to know more, see more, do more.
The rest is a journey thru bikes, quads, sandrails, this site, RV's, friends, relationships, and time.
Wouldn't change a thing.
