UPDATED - Bought the bike fun begins.

Old Post

A Honda CRF450X that is CA Plated

Do you need to have a Special Recreation Permit (Glamis Pass weekend or Season) to pass Gecko Station or the BLM LEO on Wash Road?
Scenario in mind would be coming or going into town, BMV, etc.

If yore brother was "Duning" yore MX bike and got stopped by the LEO BLM, would they want to see a M1 designation on his DL license?

Registration current - No OHV Sticker anymore, as no longer required
DOT Helmet obviously
Proper 8 foot Safety Flag being used

Potential for a issue or not?

Keeping in mind not all LEO BLM are the same LOL

I think it depends on where you are riding, down Gecko rd or in the dunes? Different rules on where you are riding.

I had a 2005 Honda 450X plated, always had a whip while riding in the dunes. Don't need a red/green sticker if it is plated.

The way that it is enforced, you would need a pass displayed on your primary vehicle. If that was all you brought to the dunes then yes you'd need a pass on it.... because of how the permit is enforced. That said, they aren't looking for primary vehicles in the dunes and would assume you brought it there in the back of a truck or trailer and would expect the pass displayed back at camp.

License wouldn't apply in the offroad setting

No helmet required for bikes offroad oddly enough (and you can ride doubles)

I’ve been told by leo; bike must have dual registration; otherwise; street legal plate must have license and insurance even off road. Even with green/red sticker law is still fuzzy and depends on agency making contact. I know this because i’ve had many plated bikes and have been stopped a few times on and off road

If this is the case, Jeeps and trucks in the dunes would need green stickers as well. I got pulled over while riding in the dunes for my whip being too short, no issues with the plated bike. Got a warning and was sent on my way.

To be 100% in compliance you would need a towed in pass, free at the Ranger station. However, if you have a paddle on it and are not cruising down Gecko or Wash Road I don't think they will give you a second look as long as you are not being a Jackass. If for some reason they do stop, you at the Drags or at the Hill and see the paddle tire and current registration I don't think they are going to do much, worst case is they ask you to go get a towed in permit.

No paddle tire and all bets are off you might get an OHV registration ticket or a permit ticket or maybe both, doubtful though

Jeeps or trucks with on road registration in the dunes either need to have a permit or towed in pass to be compliant. Once you have said towed in pass you forfeit your on road abilities, in other words no driving down the 78, Wash Road or Gecko for the time you have that pass.
That being said if nobody saw you drive out of the ISDRA and you got pulled over on the 78 heading from the Gecko to the store and didn't have the towed in pass visable, there is no way they could icket you. However have that pass hanging from your window driving down Wash Road they "could " give you the same ticket they never give a SxS for doing the same thing.

Im saying rider needs insurance and motorcycle license with a plated bike. And laws are still grey even if its dual registered. Depends on stopping authority. I’ve been told by blm dual reg no license required. Imperial county sheriff says no; licensed for road need insurance/licensed rider on public land even off road

I've learned the following so far regarding Permit vs OHV Sticker entering (via paved roads) the general camping areas of the ISDRA.

Street Legal Dirt bike entering Glamis camp areas (Wash Road or Gecko) via paved roads will need a Special Rec Area Pass (weekly/season) same as anyone else entering those areas via paved roads.

Trick here would be to pull off the hwy and enter via sand before you reach those checkpoints. As long as you have a legal OHV Flag mounted via whip, yore good and nobody has reason to look at you or check.

As @Sausage450r stated from his own person experience, allot depends on the Agency LE/Ranger you encounter and the reason for the stop/check.

Registration Question

Bought a 2006 Honda CRF450X - Guy lives in CA, has a current AZ Street Plates (Expires 2028) and CA OHV Green sticker (Expires later this year 2026)

I don't plan on driving this on CA Streets, it doesn't have all the necessary stuff CA requires, plus already had smog stuff removed, etc.

Seller told me don't bother with CA OHV, use a buddy's AZ address, avoid blah, blah, blah. His points were not lost on me, but seems like more hassle over time. Get an Out of State OHV Sticker just to ride in Glamis.

I'm hoping the CA DMV will just let me transfer the Registration to myself, update the info, etc. That sticker is not expired yet, so it should be easy.

Getting the Pink might be a little more difficult, with it being an AZ Title now, would i have to get a notarized Bill of Sale?

Any input appreciated.

It's just mind blowing how convoluted these rules/passes/permits are nowadays. Really stupid(er) is the various agencies don't seem to even be on the same page. How is a non-regular visitor supposed to even navigate this beauracacy? 🙄
I suppose my manx would be treated like a jeep?

Does it have regular plates?

Correct - You would just need a TOW IN PASS OR a Camp permit / sticker as if it were a truck - Car - Or Motorhome

The tow in pass says you can use it in the sand while you are there JUST NOT ON THE ROADWAYS - The rangers will issue you one at the ranger station. same as a Plated Car that will be used in the dunes
