Optic for Truck gun

I have the Vortex 5x prism sight. Also added a simple Vortex red dot to the top of it for 1x duty. The prism is an etched reticle with holdovers, so its still usable should there be a battery issue. If I had it to do over, I probably would have gone with the 3x instead of the 5x. YMMV.
Exactly what I am looking at. I like the etched reticle

i just left the range, and a bunch of officers was there qualifying I guess, one lady next to me stopped shooting and i hear her say i lost my dot, guy comes over and said you prob need a battery, I was kinda confused she didn't know what to do. then range master walks over and says we sell batteries in the shop you know, so she runs over there to get a new battery lol. just glad it wasn't an scenario where she really needed to rely on that lol.
No one plans to leave battery powered things on and kill the battery. But if you do , do you want it to ruin a shooting trip or put you in a dissadvantage in a self defense senerio? I'll take the nuclear powered glow in the dark sights any day over the fancy battery powered sights.

My Aimpoint Comp M4 is supposed to be good, left on for 3 years. I've never turned it off since I got it 12 years ago. Changed the battery twice.

she kinda threw me for a loop when she said i just lost my dot, guess my batteries dead, and now i can't finish lol.

I'm running a sig romeo4 red dot sight on my AR. Its my truck and home defense gun. Has the capability to switch between red reticle, green dot and green reticle as well. I have flip up iron sights for back up that you can aim with through the red dot sight if the battery were to die. I always carry spare batteries for optics anyways.
Canted iron sight are also available if you want fixed irons and an optic.

that vortex 5x prism scope looks sweet but i have no experience with it. I am looking for another sight for another one of my ARs so if you end up going with it let us know how it performs.

Burris fast fire 3. It works great and is really compact. Which makes it great for a gun you are pulling in/out of compact space. I run one on my 3 gun shotgun.

why not use something like troy industries flip ups?

I have several of the Holosun red dots (for rifles, not pistols). The all have the "shake awake" feature, such that the dot shows up automatically when you pick up the weapon. When sitting, it automatically turns off. With a lithium in there, you would think a LONG battery life could be had. And you can always use back up/flip up irons. I get that Holosun is China stuff, but I have not had one single problem as of yet with the 3 or 4 that I have. Someday, I would like to get into an EOTech and/or Aimpoint, but I don't think they have that "shake awake" feature, they are intended to just be left on.

My aimpoint pro has consistantly lasted 2-3 years per battery. The whole battery might be dead when you go to use it seems like an answer looking for a problem.
Change them all every jan 1st and its not an issue. You have this weapon to be prepared. The idea that you would suffer from ignoring your battery seems out of character

she looked like a dei hire, im not sure what capacity she carries at her job, she had a badge, but i didn't see her chasing anyone anytime soon lol

Ill look those up.

I'm going to look at a set of flip up front & rear irons and a get the 3x Vortex or the one they call AR (it has red & green)

Good news! Vortex is coming out with more Green Dot options in a month. So I'll be waiting for those. In the mean time I think I'll get a flip up rear sight and see how it lines up with the stock front sight

Both will be available in Green and they are motion activated ('shake awake')

We used to tell people to change their Bats after they shot. The recoil did something to them.
