The US Navy is actively building the Columbia class: twelve ballistic missile submarines carrying 16 Trident II missiles apiece, at a cost of around 126.5 billion dollars. That makes it the most expensive shipbuilding programme the Navy has ever run.
They are replacing the Ohio class, which first went to sea in 1981, was designed to last 30 years, and has already had that stretched to 42. The oldest boats are running out of years to borrow.
The reactor is the interesting part. It carries a life of ship core, so it never needs refuelling across the whole 42 year service life. The Ohios each had to come out of the rotation for a mid life refuel that took years, so deleting that step means twelve boats can cover work that used to need fourteen.
The first one, District of Columbia, is being built at Electric Boat and is running behind schedule.
