Im picking up a 1990 Toyota Hilux next week with a locked up engine. I dont know alot of engine details other than she is locked up cock stiff and oil had some water in it.

My plan is to make it run again and add some air ride and just have a little cruising toy.

Anyone have a running 22RE laying around or are these engines easy to rebuild?

I don’t have any help. But I was looking at one for my kid. I was gonna k24 swap it.

yikes that's a lot of wiring and rework for that, might as well go with an LS swap for that price. I just want something that runs as i plan on selling the truck once im done building it in a year.

22R/RE engines are simple and bulletproof. I didn't tear mine down all the way but i pulled it and broke it down to a long block after blowing a head gasket on the way to glamis in my teens. American pickups were called the hilux till '76 or there abouts, then they were just called a toyota pickup. The motors can make good power and can be turboed but are more on the agricultural side. You won't ever get big power out of them compared to more performance oriented 4 cylinders.

My local machine shop used to do lots of these. they had long blocks in stock. we did a swap in my neighbors truck in an afternoon & it worked out great. might call around for long blocks....

I have bought from LCE several times before. Good people and helpful. If I was in your shoes and going to sell it in a year I would buy the best condition used engine I could find. If your like me then might as well replace the timing chain and guides, water pump, oil pump, t-stat, rebuild the starter, alternator, etc while it is out. If you need any suggestions feel free to PM, I have one partially tore down in the shop.

I called and its $1750 for labor on a long block plus any parts needed. Seems steep when a whole rebuild kit with pistons, bearings, waterpump, timing chain, gaskets is $850

An old co-worker went the "parts store" reman engine for his Toyota PU and nothing but problems with it. He was pissed as he probably spent a month detailing the engine bay and painting everything.

i had an 86 xcab i bought with a rod knock. we rebuilt the motor and that has to have been one of the best most bullet proof vehicles i ever owned. that thing would crawl a mountain like nothing. sold it to my brother in law, he drove it for years, ran it out of antifreeze and blew a head gasket. so I pulled the head, redid it, and he drove it until he wrecked it. I really missed that damn truck. it seemed to go anywhere I wanted it to go. we used to play on the river here and it was amazing in sand. I always wanted to put 38's on it, but never did lol.

Those motors are quite difficult to find. If you find one, get it.

There are no more JDM 20-22R motors.

If it has had water on the inside, it has rust.

That said, they are a simple motor and durable.
