Got a Broken Piston, This Might Help In the Future

This was one of the Better Videos, Why Type of Fuel and What oil can make a difference, in broken engine parts,

LOL, Had a motor some had dynoed in CA, and it broke a piston, thought this would be a good one for peeps

I think he’s mainly talking about LSPI on direct injection motors there with the calcium.

If you go to Lake Speed Site, They talk about Low Speed Compression Breaking pistons on a lot of motors, This is just with Diesel Oil, but tuners that only tune for WOT, can have a effect on all Detonation, just a good thing to look out for. Octane and Oil can make a huge difference in what we do,
We use High Load and High Heat, Someone told me last week there are using Diesel oil in one of my motors, i was like Uggg. and other does a oil change once a season, Uggg.
Oil and Fuel, is the best and easiest part of a maintenance schedule to keep everything living longer

It’s crazy that people run diesel oil when vr1 is close to the same price on Amazon…

While I think using the right oil for the job is key, and you should especially listen to the guy who built it (tolerances are based on expected oil/weight after all), for those of us running stock engines it's not necessarily a bad choice if you pick the right one, especially for how cheap it is. Costco, for example:

Says API CK-4/SN right on the package. CK-4 is current for diesel engines, yes. But SN is still current for 2020 and older gasoline engines.

Since I doubt any of us are running a full 2021+ emissions systems on our buggies, it appears to be perfectly fine for gasoline engines. I would not recommend running any oil that isn't designed for diesels only in a gasoline engine.

I thought Zinc was what made Diesel oil better, until the EPA said cut the zinc, so it's the same are regular motor oils now?

Yeah, still has somewhere around 3-4x the ZDDP that regular oils have. Most of the ZDDP cuts are in the newer grades of gasoline oils.

The additive packages differ between the two oils. I am seeing more and more calcium in our diesel oil analysis results. Newer engines are built with tighter tolerances and more efficiency so I can only assume the calcium and molybdenum increases in the additive package is designed not just for soot but also for viscosity as a thickening agent.

I am no oil geek but have to analyze and convey a lot of the samples to my customers.

It's been quite the discussion given everything we work on is in salt water and water intrusion is a common occurrence. Following or trending oils and providing a good opinion isn't getting easier with the additive packages becoming more boutique even in the name brand oils.

What's your choice these days Mr. Grease? :)

Kendall GT1 20-50 is a great oil for turbo/supercharged gas engines.
Hard to beat and easier to acquire Valvolene VR1 20-50

I didn't look at what Adam at Kali Kustoms gave me for my first oil change but I kept the bottle to reference later. Thats out in my trailer at Dunes Edge. Plan to sample the oil in the car when it gets home end of month.

Huh, actually pretty cheap/gallon...

Do you use that as a direct swap of 15W40? Or is that just for boosted motors?
I recently started running my tired 7.4 Vortec with 15-40 Rotella, and now you guys got me second guessing.

In my last built motor, my builder (BCM) recommended Delo and I never had an issue. I did change it after every trip though, but that is to do running E85. It is just a mini van motor.

Things have changed in the gasoline and diesel oil blends. What was once ok to use has changed. 7.4 bbc won't care much but a new 6.2 in a truck won't like it.

All of my piston problems I'm pretty sure weren't related to the type or brand of oil in the motor
Just saying
