Now that I’m a position that I don’t work any OT, I’m gonna boot my lawn guy and start doing it myself. Been about 7 years since I was in the game. Should I look into the electric powered units? Looking for mower and weed whacker. How’s run time? How many cuts can I get before I have replace the battery? Are they better options then having to deal with gas/mix with the old classic Honda or Toro? 

 
I had a Toro gas weed whacker and loved it but got tired of mixing gas and cleaning the carb since it only gets used a few times a year. 
 

I just bought a Dewalt weed whacker. It is the 14” and it’s foldable. The 14” has better reviews than the 17” ( more durable head unit). It has a high and low power setting. Low setting chews through just about anything and gives about 25min of straight runtime.  Check Acme tools, they usually have the best prices and it’s on sale now and includes a 5 amp/hr battery and charger.

They're making us go to electric at work.  It's pure insanity and I'm fighting it all the way.

I did get a battery DeWalt weed whip (whichever is most expensive) to try.  Great if you're just working a lawn.  Battery lasts forever.  But the bump head sucks ass and if you try and cut anything other than soft grass, you're F'ed.

DeWalt 20v blower (biggest one) is great for driveways and roofs.  But nothing will be adequate for large lots or roads.

One more reason I gotta leave this state. I hope a huge oak falls on Newsom's house and it takes 6 months to remove with Barbie chainsaws.

 
I've got a DeWalt self propelled that runs on two 20v batteries. I like it so far and also like that the batteries fit my cordless tools. I needed a new mower and went this route this time because I couldn't make a gas mower last more than a couple years. Gas, oil, air filters, carburetors and pulling a rope a hundred times on a POS that didn't want to start just got old.

 
If you already have electric drills (Dewalt / Milwaukee / etc) - get one since you've already got the batteries. The blower I have from Milwaukee is insane...love it. The lawn mower looks sweet from them, but for over 1k. it's hard to justify. Not worrying about a carb getting clogged or mixing gas is nice.  I have a nice echo weedwhacker and chain saw, as they die off I'll prob switch.

 
Sticking with gas powered mower and weed eater. My 20 yr I does the yard and doesnt seem to mind them, but it's not a big yard. I do have two Hardor Freight blowers, one at home and one in the trailer for Glamis sand. Also have the cordless drill and impact in the trailer. Been a few years and they've been fine.

 
I'm on a 1/2 acre. I went gas mower and 40volt ryobi blower and weed wacker. I too was tired of cleaning small 2 stroke carburetors. The 40 volt stuff works just as good or better than any of the gas powered items i had in the past.

I have a pretty good size yard, I use DeWalt 20v weed eater and blower and a Toro gas mower... don't mind the battery stuff for noise and efficiency but I wouldn't swap the mower for the world. It works too good

 
I have the Ryobi 40v lawn mower. It does very well. I even mowed my lawn at 9:30 at night once. Why...cause I could!

It has LED lights and is super quiet.

Funny cause the next day my neighbor commented...HEY, Did you mow your lawn last night? I didn't hear a thing but saw that is was freshly cut this morning!

I just make sure I charge the battery after I mow the lawn...there has been a time or 2 it has run out of juice!   :simrak:

I can probably get 2 mowings, front and back on 1 charge, but I just charge it after each time.

I have been very happy with it...probably had it 3+ years, still on same battery.

If you have Bermuda...this mower will NOT work for you. It will not cut that short.

Many years ago before battery powered lawn mowers my wife had a small lawn in the back yard and the motor blew up on her lawn mower, I threw the motor away and made a adaptor for a old 110v cooler motor. She ran that thing for years without and problems until she decided the grass was more work than enjoyment. DON~~~

Not sure how fast you'd go thru it but its not supposed to  clog up small jets and carbs. Probably not cheap but wondering if its worth it.

^^that's the 4 stroke but they have 2 stroke as well.  We use this at work.  Higher octane too.  Mostly for Chainsaws.  I use it my personal weed whips, blower and saws.  Haven't had something not start in 6+ years.

I went with the Ryobi 40v weedeater (with attachments for edging, pole saw, etc) and their 40v self-propelled push mower.  I loved the first mower so much I bought a second one when I found one VERY cheap that was a return.  My wife and I have maintained two half acre lots this year with them (and I live in Central Florida, where we need to mow every 5 days or so during the summer) and I couldn't be happier with the Ryobi's.  Get the 40v and you'll have PLENTY of power and battery life.  Everything works as advertised and we haven't had a lick of trouble with them.

My electric lawn equipment was great with one caveat at the end. 

  This house was a 12K sq/ft lot. The weedwacker was the most powerful 2 line trimmer that makita made at the time. Lithium batteries and brushless motors are the key. The trimmer handled grass, even wet grass with no problems and during the Spring when weeds started coming up, the trimmer had no issues besides running through the two 5 amp/hour batteries before the yard was finished. I would buy another no question. 

  I also have both small and large makita battery blowers, hedge trimmer, and chainsaw. They are just really good tools and the convenience of cordless and batteries that I already own are a no brainer. Highly recommend. 

  The mower was a different story due to the lead acid battery. It was a black and decker with self propel function. Power was a little low but I could manage. The convenience of pushing a button and throwing a bale to mow was perfect. I could only get about 3 years out of the battery though before it dies completely. At $135, I ended up selling it and buying a honda gas mower with no regrets. I think I would try a lithium powered brushless mower now but would stay away from a brand that required their own proprietary mower battery.

I have a friend that has an Air B&B.  He has a computerized lawnmower.  It comes out of its cage at 2am....All by itself, it runs around the yard for awhile and then parks itself for a charge.  It knows when the battery is getting low, and mows until it is almost outa charge.

I think that it runs every night....not sure.  The tenants and the neighbors have no idea that it runs around.

The bad....He had to lay down the "fence"....submerged border wire.

Makita here.  Use my 18v Makita leafblower and trimmer all the time.  If you already have a good quality 18v battery set of tools (Milwaukee, Makita, etc), no brainer.

Thank you all for the replies. After some continued research, I think I'm going to go the electric route for both mower and whacker and see how it goes. Small lot, only twice a month, I think I'll be ok. If that doesn't work, I could always go back to a Honda or Troy.
