Who has gone from ~500RWHP to 1000+RWHP in your sandcar? what was your experience?

I just heard from a guy with a Tatum Spider I built an SC 441 for.

He had a nice name brand LS engine in his car and it ran ok for NA , kinda rumpity, and  Dyno'd just under 500RWHP but he wanted more power and more Torque and better manners.

We settled on a supercharged 441 on 91 and e85 with a flex fuel sensor.  It Dyno'd out at 1007HP on 91 and 1232 on e85.  TQ was over 1000ft Lbs on e85  it idles like a pissed off stocker and runs smooth as a watch.

He did his first shakedown run on 91 and report came back "she's a beast"  and then 10 minutes about wheelies in all gears, and it feels smoother than his last engine. Now his GF wants her car upgraded  ....

I remember my first engine swap like that and it scared me at first, but the excitement was heart pounding 100+MPH  wheelies - that Never gets old ...

Boost makes Everything better IMO

Anyone else had a similar experience?

100% agree boost makes everything better.
I went from a stock/tired LS1 to a MP112 LS1 and now swapping that out with a 2300 Maggie.
Love boost.
Makes duning/driving so much more fun!!!!!!

I have a lot of respect for you so my comment isn't a direction at what you've built or your buddies happiness.

I can't dune fast with my front wheels off the ground.

My engine is done and we will soon find out if my balance is correct. I honestly think 600-800 is more than enough, but to each their own. I'm not at the drags unless someone want to watch the show. And wheelies well...............

Didn't go near that drastic but I had a Turnkey LS7 I'd assume was around 400rwhp. Car did fine great and much better than my original LS2 stroker that made 385 with a Danzio tune. I built and Installed a LS2 stroker with Magnacharger 122H that made 5psi on E85, did 630 rwhp on Redline's dyno.

Completely different car, it was like jumping back on a two stroke bike. Changed the I drive, shift points, jumping, sliding. Way more fun to dune.

You darn FUNCO snobs  :classic_laugh:

Especially the one's with more HP than is allowed enabled by those "exotic builds"

GM - I think you can have it almost both ways ... more HP/TQ is great when you want it, but you can keep you foot out of it and you learn to use higher gears - cars with that HP don't lug. Mine is light, but I dune around 1800 RPM is 4th most of the time and that instant TQ lets me scoot around fast with no wheelies when I don't want to.

IMO these cars will never handle as well as a Funco Subi (flat 4) if for no other reasons than the perfect balance and that you get to hook and slide without tons of Torque when off the hard boost

What SC and how much boost?
Kenne Bell 4.2L  12lbs on 91 (it's 9:1 comp and has soften'd chambers)  18Lbs on e85   that with a combo of good timing with good cam and  heads gets the job done  - not the most HP but reliable

Same combo I like to do  -  My car is same boost and build but smaller KB SC

my last funco gen4 with 500+ HP @ 25psi was a blast. felt like you could use all of the car. my new GTF with 1200hp is a different animal. still just as easy to dune , not driving very hard its still almost too fast. you pin it grab a gear and instantly of course Grant turns and you think $hit i got to get this sumbitch slowed down before I launch into outer space. it is a bit hard for me anyway to go fast with the front end not in the air but I'm sure with some seat time ill get better. only got 4 weekends on it last season.

I want to buy mine back.. wife would kill me.. was just under 500 to the ground, 415ci LS3 CBM stroker. All I know is I was to double that, I'd probably need 935's as I twisted 934s twice just by hammering the throttle.

I was a 'NA' guy, but after driving turbo vehicles, I'd be down for the same motor (or bigger) with a turbo on it.. love waste gates!

abc

i bet it would be a blast but like GM said you cant steer with the wheels in the air. ill have to settle for 650 hp at the engine is all it takes at the EPO :classic_biggrin:

I dont know what i would do with more?  i have it but almost never use it

Fullthrottleguy helped me with my rebuild and adding boost and I love the power difference. Had my 416ci NA motor freshened up and added a 3.2L Kenne Bell running 10lbs of boost and the power is amazing. Trying to get it on the dyno again soon cuz I feel like it has a pretty conservative tune in it and think it has more life left in it!!

I went from a very mild NA LS2 (roughly 500 crank hp) to a mild TT LS2 (roughly 800 crank hp / pump gas)  and I loved it!  Running through the dunes at the same speed overall, because you can use so much HP while duning... but man the boost is so much fun.... Nice little roller and the wheels are up, little baja session between a group dunes, and you pick up speed so quickly. It's not too much power where the wheels are lifting on me while sliding or hammering down through bowls.  Never was a drags guys, and still not... but the boost makes a pass or two a lot more fun than before.
