Folks,

I have an old Wells Cargo trailer & the rear loading door has a small ramp that is on a big piano hinge across the length of the ramp.  the picture below is much like it, but not exact.  the ramp is crushing (its hollow) and the hinge is falling apart.  is this something that can be ordered like a wheel bearing, or would i have to make my own?

Also the door flexes a LOT when Im putting the car in & out.  Ive seen supports that go up the outside of the door, that reduce the flexing. is this a pretty normal thing I can buy @ a trailer supply place or would it be better to get something made?

FWIW, Im in San Diego, if anyone has any suggestions.

thanks!!!

Can buy piano hinges from grainger or mcmaster car.

The deal with a support, you wont always be unloading on level terrain with what you use it for. Supports would be best if they are folding and adjustable, or you could reinforce the door itself so it supports the weight better

You might want to pull the inside door skin off to see what’s happening with the structure. An older Wells Cargo is almost certainly a steel door vs aluminum. You might have some serious rust/corrosion in there. I don’t know how heavy your car is but unless you have something unusual, you shouldn’t see a lot of noticeable flex in that door.

its 2600 Lbs.  Yea its a 94, Im not sure that I really want to pull it apart.  LOL.

I used to race with a guy that had something like this on the back of his trailer.  the struts were about 1/3 this wide & they looked solid while installed.  He said that he bought them @ "some trailer place.  My goal here is to get a few more years out of this thing...

This is what my ramp looks like, but this I think will be the simpler part of this...

There is a little plastic wedge that I guess is supposed to prevent it from collapsing.  Well the one on the other side collapsed.
