I have been shopping for a trailer for about a month. We have been going back and forth between a power tilt deck over or an enclosed, both 24’. I have learned the CHP are beginning to enforce trailers gvwr over 10k and require a class A cdl. What has your guy’s experience been with this? I guess it’s common for the trailers to be derated to 9990 gvwr so they are not considered a class A Commerical Vehicle per the ca vehicle code.

Just get the Non Comercial Class A endorsement on your licence.....Everyone is heaver than the decal...best to get the NON COMERCIAL Class A

It’s been the law as long as I remember, rarely enforced.

There are differences in the licenses get the commercial book and read about the differences. I think you have to go through a school now on the commercial license.

When did they go to a commercial class A for 10k? Last I remember it was a non-commercial over 15k.

10k and you need a commercial or non commercial

Exception: with the class c Rv trailer endorsement you can pull a 5th wheel Rv trailer up to 15k, this is like a 10 question test

Wouldn't section 12804.12(a) be applicable?
That appears to only be applicable to rv’s, but without reading the whole section of the vehicle code it’s hard to tell.

This is why I got a Cdl, I never know what I might wast to drive tomorrow.
I didn’t get passenger endorsements or haz mat though.

One thing that caught me off guard recently was that driving a 12 or 13 passenger carpool van requires a passenger endorsement

All these Ca. vehicle code laws are for is a money grab to ticket the unknowing driver.

While good advice for those just towing travel trailers / toyhaulers; everything else i.e. carhaulers / flatbeds / dump trailers etc. needs the full Commercial A to be legal if over 10k - Green Arrow

Non-Commercial Class A only lets you tow a Travel Trailer over 10k / Fifthwheel travel trailer over 15k - Red Arrow

With all the Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements now active, schooling is required to get a new CDL. CA requires minimum of 15hrs be logged behind the wheel with an instructor and an attestation form completed in conjunction with the schooling.

The other world that’s getting beat up over lack of licensing is the horse people, they are pulling these gooseneck horse trailers with living quarters that are not considered rv’s even.

Race trailers with names on trailer starts leaning towards commercial

All of these require a Cdl.

I won’t put a sticker on my toter or stacker for this reason, I don’t need to be flagged commercial, which then changes insurance requirements, ca/dot numbers

Does this include the non commercial class A?

What I am shocked at after looking at this again is that with a non commercial class a you cannot even tow a box trailer that weighs 10000lbs or more

I'd just get the non commercial license, it's easy. But I also don't believe the rumor about CHP starting to enforce this.

In over 25yrs of doing this.... this question and the "I heard" but never any proof of actual.... never once been stopped and asked to validate registration or driver license

There was one time we entered Oceano Dunes aka Pismo, there was a CHP check point inside the park. They were after unregistered ATVs. I had a 5th wheel at the time pulled by a 2500, WW tagged the 5vr at 14900lbs. The CHP asked for registration and what was in the trailer. Showed them the truck/trailer registrations, told them a Rhino and they sent us on to find camp.

Never stopped at Glamis or Dumont, only asked to show proof of camping permit.
Even now with MoHo and box trailer, over weight and length. NADA

not saying it can't or won't happen but in this time span you'd have thought by now something would have occurred if "i heard" was correct

also, I tried years ago to get my RV endorsement and the DMV had no clue what I was talking about. I showed them the flyer and everything, the manager had no clue and could not find the test or anything. So on I went and never thought about it again.

I did that 30 years ago, same thing dude gave me the class a test and said I had my permit for class a which I didn’t want. Showed me the 5 question test then took it away and I got the endorsement until my license renewed and they forgot to put it back on
