My son tells me he's headed to the east coast with his GF to build a wooden surfboard.  It's going to take week to do.  I was like WTF....  who does this???  Flights, hotel, car rental, plus the cost of the board, etc...

well today it came in.  I gotta say it's pretty damm cool.  He designed it explicitly for a purpose and knew what he wanted.

After they class ends they keep all of the board and glass them and package them up for shipping.  They put one layer of glass and resin on the top and resin only on the bottom.

There is some kind or hydrofobic (sp?) airgap back by the leash anchor to keep the pressure in the board equalized with the ambient pressure.

And hell or high water, he is taking it out tomorrow.   LOL

Wow that is awesome! So great to see a young man interested in learning the art and pride of craftsmanship, as opposed to "I can get one on Amazon".

That is an awesome project. Glad to see a young man doing something constructive, thanks for sharing a proud Dad time very awesome.

Nice work! That’s a trip he will remember for a long time.

That is really cool.  I was thinking he was gonna do a vintage Tom Blake style design.  But it looks like they use vintage design methods, but the board looks like a typical longboard.

Tom Blake, for those who don't know:

the whole thing kind of tripped me out.  new England would have been the LAST place I would have thought you would go to build a surfboard.  and in my small world, there are only 2 kind of boards.  the 900 Lb Koa boards that Kahanamoku and Kahanu rode and the foam/Glass boards that I grew up on.  LOL.

and Given that my neighbor shapes boards for Mitsven I would have thought that would be his first stop......

He has a short board and a number of med/long for the breaks we have here in SD, but wanted something bigger he could use for some of the "old school" nose riding & other techniques.  His interest in learning ALL about what he is into is impressive to me.  but.....  Im kind of like that too.  Im a hot rodder and while I really dont like the low riders or import cars, I REALLY appreciate the passion & patience it takes to pull that off.  the low riders amaze me every time I see one.  detail on top of detail & top of detail.  nothing missed.

Eff the surfboard,  I wanted to see the GF. Lol
This chick is the whole package.  Studying for her Dr, hikes and camps with him ALL over the country in the back of a 2007 ponty-yak G5, makes him think and feel and push himself.  While I don't agree with some of her hippy hippy dippy views they are good for each other.  Love all 3 of them "to infinity and beyond ".

Oldest son, me, wife, GF, youngest son.

That's super cool. I'd surf it once and make it a permanent hanger. Funny, I have one of those "900lb solid Koa boards in Hawaii, I just can't figure out how to ship it home.
