My boys, 14 and 16 have been doing there own pre season maintenance on there quads for a few years now. I started to show them at a young age, gotta put in the work, it cost to play. Plus I enjoy having them in the garage, Any time I'm in the garage tinkering with stuff they usually come out and try and help. Well this past weekend my older boy was changing the oil on his TRX450, its not his first time so Im just letting him do his thing. He warmed the bike up, drained the oil and goes to replace the oil filter. Little cover comes off no problem, so he removes old filter and puts new filter on. Now I tell him, don't tighten the cover to much, hand tight and that's it. So glad he wasn't using power tools, like he wanted too. I see him cranking the bolts down with all his 💪, I say George, you don't need all that force, hand tight bro that's it. Its not that tight yet, I can see how much hes cranking on that poor bolt. I let him do his thing and im not looking as im doing something else and boom. If you have broken a bolt, they make a certain sound, so I hear that pop. He goes quite, the broken screw falls out and hits the ground. broken bolt.jpg

I of course blew my lid and did everything I could do to keep it in. Didnt really work, and just went off on him. So I told him, well there goes your season bro, no glamis for you this year. He's gotta learn that not everything needs all his muscles or power tools. I basically told him what is involved to remove the broken piece in the case and lets hope you can get it out. Lol, he says I'm not doing it, you are no way. Long story short, we open the case up and you can barely see the broken screw. We got the screw out with grandpas help, and he was so relieved, but I did make him wait and we removed it Tuesday night after work and school.

He sweat it out a couple days, wife even noticed that it was bothering him 😂 . After we removed it, he looked so relieved, he even posted about it. So I'm sure he learned a lesson and he now knows the satisfaction of successfully extracting a broken belt. He says, I'm buying you a beer father and Grandpa Friday 🙌

Just picked up the new parts, had to order the bolt and the gasket. So guess what he's doing this weekend.

I used to same the same problem and have had to repair so many broken bolts and or stripped threads. What worked for me was buying a 1/4 inch torque wrench and a owners manual. I now torque everything to factory spec. Just my two cents

Hahahahaaa...Awesome story, love it.

There is only one way to learn, hands on just like this. It's what my did with our ATC's back in the day, a few bolts were snapped same reason.

Matter of fact there is a small 2 Stroke Quad sitting in the garage that needs a top end...guess who needs to rebuild it ;)

That's perfect idea. They will believe that like the Bible vs anything I say anyways LOL

thats funny, because that is exactly what he said, next time I'm gonna use that torque thingy that goes click click when its tight. I said why didn't you?

I learned the exact same way when I rebuilt my first dirt bike engine. My dad used to joke that there was tight and then “Shaun tight” never knew about proper torque on bolts until I stripped a bunch. Now I torque everything to spec. I used to tighten lug nuts way over tight. Until I broke a stud and had to replace it. We all learn somehow, good on your boys for learning the ropes…. So many kids don’t know how to lift a wrench.
