At the end of the 2019 season one of the people that occasionally joined our group at G knew I had  solar I had on my Moho and had done a number of systems and so he asked for a parts list for his toy hauler

I sent him a diagram and parts list and told him chose carefully on parts ...

Long story, short he decided to shop everything on ebay to save a few $$ and source directly from China since he was in no hurry  - thats not always bad, but quality control of electronic devices is always questionable at best.

He bought a 50 Amp Charge controller for $49... the one's I use cost at least 4- 5x that much.  3 Months after he installed the system the charge controller got stuck wide open and literally blew his interstate deep cycle batteries apart. Luckily there was not a fire, but his battery box was full of acid  and all his battery cables were corroded,  and replacing 1/0 copper is not cheap

Just a cautionary tale  -  solar and batteries are high current capable sometimes saving a few dollars costs a lot more  ...

I have a friend just like this guy.

He will ask your advice and then go in another direction.

I've learned to just sit back and watch the show.
Either we have the same friend (don't think so), or there are a few friends like this floating around!!

I don't know anyone who had that happen to them, but a friend of mine had 6 golf cart batteries and one was shorted, so the cables and the battery itself were extremely hot, drawing most of the current from his Morningstar 45A controller.
