Cant find much info online, but I see a ton of people run them. Noticed they are on pretty pricey vs running a simple pre filter. What is the benefit, lifespan and is it worth it overall to spring for one? FWIW, it would be installed on a Honda 3.5.

They are the best at filtering dirt out of the air. They have fins inside that spin the air, the larger particles are removed by centrifugal force, then the air goes through a paper air filter (Donaldson makes that type) and the intake air is much cleaner than other types of filters. For a 3.5, one should be enough, a V8 would usually use 2. These are very similar to heavy equipment air filters to protect the diesel engine.

I run a double 15" set up on mine with an LS2.  I love them because they're very effective at cleaning the air and no worries about pre-filters or over or under oiling a filter.  The filter is simple to change out once a year too.  But you're right, the initial cost is much more as well as the potential fab up of the intake tube.  Personally, I'd recommend them if your set up allows the space.

Does orientation matter?  How about the velocity of air going through them?  seems like you could over filter something & not get enough velocity to make them work.

thanks

Bob

Cliff is very knowledgeable about his product. http://www.uniquemetalproducts.com/  I would call him for the best info. FYI he told me years ago that a 90 degree bend had the same restriction as 4' of straight pipe. At least that is how I remember it.

I went with a Donaldson housing:

CFM to HP says about 400hp before restrictions become higher (capable of up to 500hp at high restriction if you're into pushing things).

Pictures were lost, but after 2 seasons now on this filter and about 400 hours, intake is still spotless.  It has a secondary filter so even if there's a tear or dust migrates through the primary media, you're still covered if you're paying some attention.

$145 for the whole thing, replacement filters (Part # P611190) are $32.

I like the filtering, I have never seen one fail, but be very careful of the restriction. We had serious problems with duals on a 900HP SC car  - on 500HP Honda even a Turbo car or anything NA I would guess they would be great.  I use a single 18" CBM (K&N style) with and Outerwear and I swap it out if I am going more than 3 days in a row and I have a less than 1000HP SC car ... Clean air is important .

I don't think it'd be a problem on a 3.5 Honda (300hp?)...

I would say that falls within the usable parameters  - but I know a few people that say their Honda's are 1000HP  😜
Me too. None of them use them for more than 2 minutes at a whack, most use them for 8-9 seconds, and all rebuild them often.
