Scanning in Pictures & Digitizing Video

Like probably most of Y'all, we have about 900 photo albums & a huge ass box of video's (in multiple formats).  Ive done a bunch of looking around & there are lots of options available & was hoping to get some first hand experience from folks that have recently done this.  So, have any of you gone though & digitized all of this stuff?

I paid someone to do over 5,000 slides that were my grandfather, all put on CD's.............guess what, nobody has CD readers anymore on their computers....................so now I am looking to put them on an external drive.

I am also interested for film, I have boxes of film reels, Super 8 and 8 millimeter.
