We lost a legend yesterday, Wally Reed , known by many as "Duct tape Wally", a name he wasn't particularly fond of but loved the fame. He lost his battle with lung cancer yesterday. I met him years ago in St Anthony dunes as he would spend the summers there. You may have read the article I wrote about him some years ago in Sand Sports magazine called "Bona Fide Duner" Many from Glamis have met him and if you have you  would have remembered him. We shared many miles in the dunes and his buggies weren't the stuff featured articles were about but I watched him keep up with any of the groups he chased around. Please if you have met him , please share your experience here. Godspeed Wally!!!

I’ll try and find some pics, especially ones of his Aerostar Van to toy hauler conversion. Too bad the site crashed, we had a big party for him in Saint A, he came over to Sand Hills Resort with his herd of Poodles, had some good pics…Rip Homie, you had a great run!

He had some backyard ingenuity that’s fo sure. Great guy. We duned with him too. He just asked if he could follow. We are a little faster then the average group. We had like 6 buggies. He was in the back and would eventually catch up. He did say that was a little faster run then I was used to   RIP Duct Tape Wally

I met Wally in Idaho back in 2013.  He lead the run that day and took some good lines.  He then came over to our camp that evening and had ice cream with us.  Brought his dogs with him and sat and talked for quite a while.  We enjoyed his company!

RIP Wally

Walter, or as we used to call him, Woody, used to camp with us for years. The motorhome was called the woodabego. Lots of great memories with his duct tape glasses and coffee cup. I crashed my buggy in the dunes and tore it up pretty bad. Well Walter literally used duct tape a wire and we got it back on three wheels, running back to camp. God Speed Woody, you will be missed.

I have many stories about Wally, one most memorable was when we had just left Devils and my rear outer -lower 5 link threaded bung just pulled out of the carrier. Well thanks to Wally and his supply of bailing wire we stuck it back in the hole and wired the heck out of it and I was able to drive it all the way back to camp. Another time he stopped by our cabin and the wife offered him some breakfast so he took a plate of scrambled eggs and sitting on the couch with his pups he proceeded to feed them first, with his fork. Those dogs were his life and whenever one of them died he was just devastated for weeks.

God Speed Wally.  The epidemy of a simple and functional innovation.
