So my truck runs good, although the fuel mileage seems low (13ish), and doesn't have as much power as it did when new. I felt for a while that the boost seemed low or something. Fast forward, check engine light on and its time for smog cert. Turns out EGR and cooler were super clogged. I gained about 3mpg on the way home and power was back. Just a FYI for those with similar trucks. BTW my truck has about 230,000 miles.

isnt it great that all that chit is plumbed back into your intake to be reburned.    delete     i think that truck has a vgt turbo might want to clean the vanes in that too

How hard is that to get to?

Looks like a mid 70's EGR on a SBC.....

Diesel EGR's really are a crappy idea....

You don't need one.  Delete it, and drive.  SMOG comes up, you undelete it, rinse and repeat.  How much money would you have saved in lost fuel economy and repair if you would have?

have to take the turbo off PIA don't know what truck you have some older power strokes had problems. i would imagine the intake is carboned up pretty bad as well. its just crazy how bad a egr is for a engine

Not sure, but it's not exactly cheap if you have to it every 2 years. Too much work than I want to do myself at this stage of my life.

you just need to disable the egr valve via a customs tune do a little research on line there are a few different company's that had tuners that would just disable the egr valve so no exhaust go back into the intake . i did mine about 10 years ago don't know if any of the company's are left doing it after the epa crack down

If anyone is doing it they aren't talking about it publicly.  I mentioned a deleted tune by a certain well known tuner on the duramaxforum.com and my post was edited.  I inquired as to why and was told by a Mod that any references to deleting were removed.  He said the EPA and other alphabet people used the info on the forum to go after certain companies.

Also, I had 445,000 miles on my non-deleted 2006 LLY and never pulled the EGR to check it.  I did the PVC reroute at around 150k miles but that was it.  I'm sure my EGR was just as bad at the OP's.  Just before I got rid of the truck the turbo vane was acting up.  I pulled the sensor and cleaned it which helped a little (it was sticking) and I was very close to doing the DIY turbo vane cleaning with Easy-Off oven cleaner (look it up on YouTube) but never got around to it.  The turbo vanes can be cleaned in place.

So what kind of gains can be expected by doing that?

i have a lml 2011 am in a different boat its a work truck now 10 yrs old 200k on 18000k hours the truck runs 12 hrs a day never shuts off. when it was new the dealer put 2 egr valves on it said they were coking up because of the idle time and told me they weren't going to warrantee another one. also had some dpf issues so at 75k new exhaust no dpf and a delete tune never had a problem since except a cp4 pump went bad. then again the dealer wanted to change the whole fuel system for big bucks i just replaced the pump i guess i got lucky with that the pump alone fixed the problem. also i don't keep fuel mileage logs but i went from filling every 3 days to a week so that was huge. if you only use the truck occasionally and mostly tow with i would probably leave it stock but if you drive a lot and want a little more power more reliability and better fuel mileage do some mods there are several diesel places and forums on line do some research. i believe most of the tuning is done with efi live and you have to get a tune from someone download into efi live and then into your truck and the tune will be specific for what ever up grades you do.  I don't think they have any plug and play setups anymore the epa went nuts on these guys.
