Okay, so now that Trump will being going back to the White house, one of his big campaign points was that he was going to apply Tariffs to everything. Now I know some of that is just his blow hard talk, but I am expecting him to instituting multiple Tariffs so it got me wondering what to really expect.
Now if you read main stream, or better yet Reddit, we are screwed and everything is going to triple or even quadruple in price.
So, we have some really smart people on this board, alot of people with real world experience (not just keyboard warriors) so figured it would be a good place to have a realistic discussion.
So how do you see this playing out? How do you see tariffs impacting prices? Is there a need to "stock up" on materials, electronics or goods etc (not talking toilet paper).

First off Reddit is full of misinformed libs.. stop with that. Educated and smart? Yes.. just misinformed or as we call them educated idiots..

I’m tired as shit but relax everything will be fine..

Oh I 100% agree. Reading reddit is more of entertainment watching stupidity. However, I do think there will be some impacts of Tariffs being levied, just wondering what people with rational thinking around here think that might end up looking like.

What it comes down to is he wants American Jobs FIRST! Build it here, DRILL BABY DRILL!!!
If you import stuff, that is fine. But there are going to be Yuge Tariffs in place!

So don't plan to eat many fruits and veggies this winter! If Trump puts the promised 25% tariff on all things Mexico, expect your veggies to jump by 25%. Imperial Valley will try to keep up but with no migrant farmers to pick the crops, I am not sure they will be able to produce. How many American made cars are assembled or use parts made/assembled in Mexico? Ford, GM? I sure hope those tax cuts come through because everything else is going to cost.

The farm workers are gone? Wow.....amazing, that is one area of Immigration that is never in dispute, the visa's for workers are ALWAYS available. Why should other countries be able to dump cheap stuff on American businesses? The plants that moved to mexico? F them, I hope they jack up the tariffs on those...they STOLE american jobs.... I know of a company that just opened a center in Mexico city.....to "relieve the overload pressue" guess what......likely will be laying off AMERICANS shortly.... no more work for them it's all going to Mexico. Businesses have been outsourcing work and products to BOOST their profits, now we are screwed as a country as we don't produce anything... Time to even the field with an Eye on America First.

I can see striving for "fair trade" and dealing with countries with state owned, subsidized industry, and barriers to prevent our product sales. Namely the Chi-Coms. But the NAFTA ship sailed 30 years ago, against Ross Perot's sage advice. You can't instantly say, "Mexico bad". That's stupid.

He did institute tariffs on some products in his first term. It won't be on everything, he will have a strategy, the point is to drive businesses to build and supply product from within the US.

FYI, I already get my veggies and Fruit from the US, delivered once a week to my house from the central coast, last longer, taste better, and no chemicals.

THIS!!!

NAFTA was replaced with USMCA in 2020 under Trump.

I think that Trumps bluster about tariffs on everything was his usual tactic. I think he uses these type of comments to send a message to those who take advantage of us. He will be more targeted in how he proceeds with implementing tariffs.
As far as cost to the consumers, it may or may not. Remember, he used tariffs during his first term to force change of foreign tactics of importing their products to the US while protecting their own industries with tariffs on products from the US. And the impact of those tariffs during Trump's first term did not have a major impact on us. In fact, inflation was low. And Biden kept most of those tariffs in place during his term because they were effective.

Spot on. Tariffs, or more importantly, the threat of tariffs are a valuable tool in negotiating trade agreements that are fair / beneficial. It is possible that if implemented the tariffs would have negative short term effects. It’s about time we had someone negotiating on our behalf that understands he / she represents the US, not the global cabal.

Costs of some goods will go up.. long term more jobs in America as opposed to overseas

There is also a big difference on what Trump says and what he actually does. He does say things to get the MAGA crowd fired up and engaged, but in reality, his policies are much more Moderate than his words.
How much was the due to not having control of house and senate though? With both in place, I can see policies actually going places for once.

I'm REALLY hoping he learned how to work the system the first time. Having both houses will be easier than not, but he still has to battle the swamp. They are all Eff-ing crooked....

Didn’t he have the house and the senate for his first two years?
Yes and Kevin McCarthy....and Mitch F'd it all up because he wasn't part of the "deep state"......He will go right over them to the people...if nothing Trump remembers and he learns.

Wont effect me much all my materials and consumables are american made.

On pluto tv you can watch a channel that
Is all price is right from the 70s and 80s. They are giving away those tv’s refrigerators, furniture, microwaves etc that all last FOREVER. They all have one thing in common. Even then they are 3x’s as much as they cost now. But they are of the highest quality and all made in america from american parts by american hands. If we had more of this skilled labor that paid decent we wouldnt have 30 year old burger flippers with a 20-25$ minimum wage

Trump was more effective in his first term at everything he did than any politician in the last 50 plus years maybe more
I believe if he makes a mistake he will change course like any good business man would
I am very excited to watch what I think could be a most historic change but there is always unintended consequences.
One thing that could be effected is housing, if 10 to 15 million people return to their own country will there be 1 to 2 million vacancies in apartments and houses ? I have read that we have overbuilt apartments and that rents are already coming down, so could house prices and rents come down a substantial amount ? will there be a shortage of labor again and a corresponding wage increases, could be a wild ride.
one place I think house values could take big hit is washing DC as Trump and musk are talking about doing away with entire government divisions like Education and moving other departments out of Washington to other states.

Hearing him talk about spending cuts, and shrinking government is encouraging. Last time, even before China-Clap, the budget deficit, debt, and trade deficit all got substantially bigger. He also proposed negative rates. That's insane. Blowing a bigger bubble is not a thriving economy. I hope he gets better advice this time.
