I'll be driving from Houston to San Diego this weekend...First day will be from Houston to El Paso, then from El Paso to home...

Any recommended BBQ places along the 10 I should stop in for lunch? Any place in El Paso to eat dinner?  Fireworks places along the route maybe?

Rudy's....I hope that is not what you wanted.  Rudy's is awfully generic and a chain.

San Diego ain't got nut.N like Bucces (a Convience Store crossed w/a Cracker Barrel and a truck stop).

In Van Horn, TX there is a Mexican Food place.  I don't remember the name.  John Madden thought that it was the greatest place ever.   If I remember right, it was so-so.  He used to travel by bus, if you remember.  He'd stop there when he passed through.

If I were you, I wouldn't linger to much in El Piss-o/Paso.    I had a friend that lived there....he used to put a Club on his steering wheel, in his garage.  Van Horn, Las Cruces, and other places are better places to stay.

Whataburger beats the heck out of In-and-Out.  Blake's Lot-a-Burger in Las Cruces and Deming is way better also.

Love Blakes, and agree on not staying in El Paso.  Get past it into New Mexico.  I had some great BBQ on I-10 many years ago, but I am no help.  Can't remember the name, and I know it was for sure East of Houston.

Buc-ees is amazing...

But Whataburger is TX's version of Burger King.  NFW it's better than In N Out.

Whataburger where I live has green chile. I stopped at Whataburger in Lubbock, TX one time and asked for green chile on my burger and they were like "huh?.... Do you mean jalapenos?" It was several years ago. I know that other places don't have or know what green chile is but that is west Texas. They legitimately had no idea what I was talking about.

Whataburger is good, though. Their prices have more than doubled on a lot of things in the last few years. Blake's and Whataburger are very similar.

I could bypass El Paso and end up in Carlsbad New Mexico (i always stay at Hyatt's for points) - but it would add 60 miles / and hour to my trip.  Seems minimal, but I'm not sure it's worth it.  All the talk of not staying there is making we wonder though.

Carlsbad is a dump. The tweeker population has skyrocketed parallel to the influx of oil field trash.

The only good thing there is the caverns which is really cool but you need to dedicate a lot of time to see it. The bats flying out of the caverns in the evenings is really cool too but I don't think there's very many this time of year.

There are acceptable towns on either side to stay the night.  We usually stop at Las Cruces on the way to CA, or Van Horn on the way to TX.

Planning a road trip to visit the folks in San Antonio and was gonna stop by the caverns.  How long does it take to check out?

El Paso it is then. El Cajon and Lakeside probably have equal amount of tweekers - I'll just be sleeping in a Hyatt for the night and probably hit up that BBQ place Rockwood mentioned.

If you want to see everything it is the better part of a day start to finish. It's a lot of walking around but it's pretty easy on most people because the temperature and humidity is really good. You can cut the time in the caves down a lot by taking the elevators out but sometimes there's a long line and they break down a lot so they don't always have all of them running. I prefer to take the path out to where the bats fly out in the evenings but it's kind of a long gradual climb. We got a pretty good showing in late August several years ago. It's really up to you based on how much you want to see. Our quickest trip in and out when we didn't have much time was about 4 hours and White's City is actually where the caverns are at is about 30 minutes from Carlsbad and quite a bit further from I10 so travel time is something to think about

I had a really good time at the river walk in San Antonio one time traveling alone thanks to a couple young local girls I met at a club called Polly Esther's that were really into each other... Fun times

Made it home...40 MPH head winds and I was getting 7.5 MPG with the rental Tacoma on the first day - truck struggled to do 60. Day 2 it went up to 9ish doing 70.  I've been looking for Hurricane 228 for a good deal for a long time and saved a ton of money by doing this long trip...Laned in Houston at midnight Friday, picked up boat and drove to El Paso - arrived around 10:30 PM...Because of the wind and slower speeds - and taking longer than I wanted with seller, I ate gas station food that night.  Woke up at 5, made it home around 7PM. One tire blowout but I had a spare.

El Paso wasn't that bad...I had no idea how big of a city it was.  I'd park there again for the night if ever doing one of these runs again (hopefully no time soon, it was brutal).

That headwind can be absolutely brutal coming back. Even worse if it’s a crosswind at that speed.

Get any BBQ while there? If not, prayers sent.
