Was thinking of making a trip before they fully close to OHV in 2024.  Never been.  Probably good time of year.  Any full hookup campground with direct access to dunes?  We have 43’ tag with a stacker so dry camping on beach is not an option.

Pismo Coast Village OR Pismo Dunes RV Resort! Love both! They have a storage lot for your trailer / Bring OR Rent a truck and have Fun!

LOVE PISMO SOO MUCH!!!

Do they have direct access to drive UTV and quads to the dunes?

Nobody does / You need a PU truck to drive out of the RV park down the street to thier annex lot...then hook up and tow stacker or whatever trailer you have to the beach........There is no access from anywhere except thru main gate at the beach.

I would not bring a rail....place is way too small........just bring quads / 2 wheeler and a SXS is perfect

Option B is to just rent a toy hauler and take your PU truck with bikes and a SXS and camp on the beach. Either way its a blast and a great experience for sure. You dont need a sandrail there / It is soo small compared to glamis.  Pismo isnt for stackers and wazoo motor homes / Its way better with some dirt bikes and 3 wheelers / Quads and a SXS.....anything fancy gets abused with the salt water and ocean......wd40 on your stuff at end of day goes a long way

small but a fun summer escape from the heat. When i lived in so cal we would go basically to beach camp but have toys to take a spin around the dunes. The last 3 times i have gone i just took my jet ski and played in the waves. If i go again i will take jet skis and dirtbike surf is fun in the mornind til it gets choppy.

A lot has changed over the years....

To over night camp on the beach you must get a reservation at https://reservecalifornia.com/Web/ and search for OCEANO DUNES SVRA

No access to OHV area from outside the park. You must trailer all the way in on the beach past the signs Pole 2ish.

Not sure they even have rentals anymore, it used to be huge business.

There is a curfew, no night riding and all kinds of rules to be aware of. http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1207

Creek Closures are prominent now as well.

My group has bailed out of havasu for the 4th so I actually can get one spot left at Pacific Dunes Ranch Campground which  in a Thousand Trails park.  Anyone stayed here?  All other parks I found and that were mentioned in the thread are full,  I was thinking of taking the Moho and then also truck with flatbed for UTV and 2 quads.  Would I enter at the circled area and then drive down the beach?  Would I get stuck with a 2500 duramax and the flatbed?

Poule has the best advice going here.. I went a few Years ago and it wasnt the Pismo of my youth in the 70's but still fun in the summer

Thank you Poule!  I reserved it.  I will be taking a flatbed with RZR and quads.  Sounds like there is an overflow lot at this park, is my stuff safe?  I don't have a standard enclosed to keep it locked up night and don't want to take the stacker so flatbed it is.

Wife and I might take a little wine taste too in SLO, only 15 min away.  Weather looks killer too next weekend.

Rather not coat all my chit with WD40, if I stay off the shoreline with the toys and strictly in the  dune area, will any bare still rust?

I never had an issue / Run a cable lock...... also, hit the car wash after you ride (pull trailer up...few quarters....hand pressure wash the toys on the flatbed. You will love the area more than the dunes. Its old California small town feel.

Morrow Bay / Avila Farms / SLO / .....its the best part of California in my opinion, Couple of small poker rooms with $50 1/2 NL Texas Holdem and some cool locals......... I would love to retire there with a subi powered CA street legal Manx and a CR500 for the beach dunes.....Good Living.

RC cars in the dunes connected to the RV park were one of my all time favorite things to do with the kids!!!

I used to buy the gallon can of WD-40 and spray Everything. Quads, trailer, and anything that was metal. as soon as I got home, it was straight to the quarter car wash. Lots of soap Then home to wash everything including getting on a creeper with goggles and a hose to rinse the under side of the truck. I still have my original EZ-UP awning that I bought in the mid '80's that has Pismo corrosion on it! Other than that, it was always a blast.

Pismo was my main playground until Covid hit. What's happened to it is sad. The place is so small it has become dangerous and almost not fun to go. I recommend checking out the Jerk Pirates page on facebook. They are a great group and will help anyone in need. Be sure to air down the tires on truck / trailer and you should be fine. There is a vendor on the beach that sells air for $1.00 a tire to air back up if you don't have a compressor.

I hate to say it but the area has become full of homeless / drug addicts and theft has become an issue. Keep things locked up at night.

If you love a good steak take the family to Jocko's in Nipomo. You can thank me later. lol . McClintocks has good food but you are paying for the scenic view and the entertainment from the servers. It's at least worth a visit for that alone. You should also visit Splash Cafe for their famous Clam Chowder bowls. In the morning stop by Old West cinnamon rolls. Both are in the heart of downtown Pismo beach.

Rugged Radio's is local and would be a good time to pop in if you need any equipment serviced or replaced. Very nice shop and friendly staff.

Now back to the dunes. You will enter at the end of Pier Ave as you circled in the picture. They will give you a map and can answer a few quick questions. I recommend to check out the tide chart and to try and enter / exit at low tide if possible. Get down on the beach and head south away from the entrance before pulling over to air down. If you arrive at low tide you might even get away without airing down as it will be pretty hard packed. If you do chance it and manage to get stuck, you can then air down and get yourself out provided you didn't bury yourself in the process. If you need help, post on the Jerk Pirates page and help will arrive soon. Do not pay them. They do it for fun.

You can start looking for somewhere to park / unload after you cross the creek. You will see all the rental vendors on the left. Camping begins after that. Make sure wherever you stop, stay as high up on the beach as the others around you. Everyone camps as close to the tide line as possible without getting wet. Use your neighbors as a guide. There is a vendor on the beach that sells flags, some parts, snacks, etc in case you've forgotten something. It's called Banana Boys and they are at the entrance to sand highway.

Last bit of advice, bring warm clothes just in case it's foggy and or windy. Can be pretty cold at times. Also be very careful when heading out into the dunes. Everything heading away from the ocean is a drop off. Can be very deceiving as it looks relatively flat. Hope you have a great time. The dunes are not great but you go there for the scenery.

PS , there is a car wash on Grand Ave, right off Hwy 1. As mentioned you will want to wash everything off. The sand and the salt air can do some damage if you don't give it a good rinse off.
