Just got some new 930's and in looking at them I'm concerned about the body and the stars. They have grooves in them that travel the same direction as the balls would. The grooves are enough to catch a fingernail. I was able to make my last set last 10 years so I can't recall if this is normal and I paid extra last time to have them polished down. I do remember though that the last set didn't have these grooves. Pics attached, normal? Or should I be returning them?? These are supposed to be brand new out of the box.

Damn. Not sure but I wouldn't run them like that. I have polished my own with a metallic infused rubber bit polish thingy that sits perfectly in the slot. I think 1" diameter? I believe pacific customs or kartek list them on their site. Like a 10min job each... but some do come polished or "race prepped" already. These definitely aren't. I'm not an expert bro, but 4hrs since you posted figured I'd give you something 😁

What brand stars?

I have seen some like that. I think RCV?

Maybe best to call Kartek and inquire. Something is not adding up imo. Maybe wrong boxes got pulled, it happens.

That's the plan, just wanted to be ready if I get the "That's the way they're supposed to be" speech.

Those are GKN, if they fit tight they will need to be polished out, or what they call race prep,  it just takes time and a lot of sanding, grinding and cross cut supplies,

Those are GKN CVs, That happens from the manufacturing process. As @J Alper said they need to be race prepped. Due to the heat treat process of these CV joints it is key that you remove as little material as necessary. One of the main reason we super finish our CV joints.

Note: Even with the poor surface finish the GKN CV joints start with, after proper treatment and prep the GKN CV joints will outlast any other 930 Cv on the market.

Mostly normal.  Usually it's grease in the rough machining GKNs get at the factory and comes out with some brake cleaner.  If it's corrosion and doesn't clean normally, then yeah, not normal.

You can send them off for polishing, or let nature take its course.  They will be very tight until they wear in (hehe).

So Kartek says they put those grooves in there to help keep the grease in the joint. They say the grease gets blown out of the completely smooth ones.

That’s total BS. They don’t do that to keep grease in. I bought some stock GKN 930s a while ago not from Kartek and they looked the same.

That's the conclusion I came to as well.
