I have a product that has a small "steel" can (2" diam x 2" long) that is made out of steel & has 2 brass fittings welded/soldered/brazed to it (one on each end).  imagine a soda can with a brass fitting "welded" on each end.  I think its currently being done with a torch of some sort & tin solder, but dont know for certain.  I can not post pictures of this, but will provide drawings for anyone able to provide this service & is willing to sign a NDA.

then some things are put into this can & the can is "welded" shut.

Im in San Diego, but would be willing to get these done just about anywhere.

if anyone has any suggestions of a shop that can do these or what kind of process it might be that would provide a good air tight weld of Brass to steel.

we will be doing about 120 to 140 per month.

thanks

Bob

Who is doing it now?  Can you post a pic of just the joint?

its an off the shelf brass fitting (that is modified) then soldered to the can.

once the can is soldered shut, its painted the blue color.

@Realbadlarry,...  LOL.

seriously,  this is a product for work.  We have lots of vendors but none that can do this for us.

I also need a plater that can do manganese dioxide on copper.  If anyone knows of someone that is willing to do that.  I will need about 2000 of these a month th as well.  This seems to be pretty hard to find as well.

Do you have a pic of this joint prior to being coated blue?

Its just silver solder. Its very easy. How much per unit? Solder is getting effin expensive

I do not.  right now the current vendor is doing everything & we are trying to pull it apart, because of quality issues.  I might after this weekend.  Im taking one home to play with it in the garage.

we took one to one of our other vendors & he seems to think its tin solder.  its too soft to be Silver Solder and WAY to hard to be lead.

they run @ a slight vacuum (VERY slight, average ~.25 in-hg), but have to be able to withstand a leak check to 20 PSIG, nothing higher than that.  Rarely get done @ anything higher than 20 in-hg of vacuum or 10 PSIG.  they absolutely can NOT leak.

thanks

You can braze using a heliarc with no flux, makes a clean brass weld. I use to fix these brass parts for the mines from there electric haulers when I started to experiment with welding brass with out the flux mess. The trucks have huge diesel motors to generate electricity for the electric motors in the wheels. DON~~~

It's still brazing as you aren't melting any of the base metals together  It's just using a TIG torch instead of flame.
Yes, but you can't weld brass to steel. When you use the flame you have to use flux. It would hold fine for what he is doing. DON~~~
