What's the tolerance for movement in and out on the input shaft? Replacing my throwout bearing and clutch since it went out last weekend and felt some movement in and out on the shaft. From my understanding there should be none.

My options are put it back together and have it gone through this summer or if it breaks. Or steal the one my father in law has laying around with a fresh service on it, although his gear ratios may be different since it was behind an LS vs my Northstar.
Not sure if these #s mean as far as gear ratios and if they're close.

Half the work is already done, I would swap it for the one laying around.

i would call the trans shop that you use it might be as bad as you think to have a few bearings changed out now. up and down movement is normal and in and out shouldn't move. the input shaft is two pices if you take the bell off there is a splined sleeve going over the two shafts. the shafts thread together and the sleeve locks it from spinning it might be possible that the threaded part snapped off. were you hearing any bearing noise

I have a call in, we'll see what they say. I was hoping to head to glamis Friday, I highly doubt it will be ready by then if it needs parts. The "spare" only has 1 or 2 trips on it, legitimately, and it has a tiny bit of movement. I was going to put my dial indicators on both and use the "spare" as my baseline for warm and fuzzy.

This may be my best option, although he has it forsale since he put his S4 in.

The wife wasn't too keen on the let's just go buy a sxs while I have the trans gone through idea. Something about $$ or blah blah blah.

Dial indicators show .012 movement in and out, I'll check the other one later to see how close it is. Me thinks I'm worried for no reason.

There should be very little in and out movement of the input shaft. .012" is probably a bit excessive, I would say .005" would be the max that I would be comfortable with.

This in and out movement is from the mainshaft ball bearing in the front nosecone. Ball bearings will always have a little in and out movement, but will get worse as the bearing wears with use. You will generally start to hear the common whine of a worn out bearing in all gears under power once this bearing is nearing the end of it's life.

It is best to pull and service trans before that bearing costs you a complete set of 1st-4th gears.

Thats the data I was looking for, thank you very much. I wish more people would be able to give that kind of information. I drained the oil and everything looked normal.

I maybe have to skip this trip anyway since my wife and son are sick.

You’re most of the way there anyway. 😁
