I’m hoping to get information on the Mega Sand Transaxle.
There is no mention of it in the “Transaxle “ thread so I’m thinking maybe it’s a “one off “.

If @Sean@Weddle knows anything about it, I would appreciate his input. Also if he feels that the Mega Sand should be included in the “Transaxle “ thread please post the information there.

If my memory is accurate. There were 2 variations of the Mega Sand transaxle case.  One is unique to its self and one was similiar to a mendi 2d.  Both used VW 091 parts with 9 inch ring n pinions.  Some were 3 speed and others 4 speed.  Don't think they handled much HP and wouldn't last long  on a turbo'd engine.

Had a 3 speed in my mid engine, 2 seater for 15 years(7 years I had it). Mated to a ZZ4 350 Crate motor, FI and head work (About 375hp). Not one Issue. Had it freshened up By Wright. As stated, it had 091 gears, with the tiny reverse gear. Weak point I was told was the type 1 pinion bearing used and that you could no longer get the German made original all steel bearing anymore (NOS maybe or aftermarket one can get). Wright said If you had a mechanical internal mishap, it would have to be rebuilt as a 4 speed with different gears.

After the freshen up, I sold it and moved on to a 2D, just cause one became available to me. I never had one issue with the trans the whole time I had it. In the 3 speed form it easily handled 350 to 375hp. I was not a side stepper or jumper, but was not easy on it either. No idea about the 4 speed version.

I also had a 3 speed one and had no issues over 3 years of use hooked to a v6

omar at quicksand promoted them pretty heavly

They are virtually obsolete these days.

There are few variations that used Type 1, 091, or 2D 1st-4th gears. But they all used a 9" style R&P, either cut and welded with the proper pinion shaft, or some were made as one piece be someone along the way.

Once the R&P is gone in these, there is nothing you can do unless you find someone to splice you a new R&P for it. Which is sketchy.

Thanks @Sean@Weddle
Great feedback as always.
