JOHNSON VALLEY — A 28-year-old woman from Yucaipa died from injuries she suffered in a crash Tuesday at the off-highway vehicle area in Johnson Valley.
California Highway Patrol spokesman M. Radford said the victim was riding in a Polaris off-road vehicle, but was not part of one of the official races for the King of the Hammers events going on in Johnson Valley this week.
According to the CHP, around 5:22 p.m., a 30-year-old man from Yucaipa was driving a 2021 Polaris RZR northbound in the Better Sand Dunes area with two passengers. The Polaris crested a hill before overturing and rolling multiple times.
Jessica Leann Sharp, 28, from Yucaipa, was in the left backseat and suffered major injuries. Sharp was flown from the scene to a Morongo Basin Ambulance nearby, where she was pronounced dead.
The driver suffered moderate injuries. A 24-year-old Yucaipa man in the right front seat suffered major injuries. Both were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center.
All of the people in the Polaris were wearing helmets and harnesses, the CHP said. None have been identified by the CHP or coroner.
The crash is under investigation. The CHP said alcohol or drugs were not a factor.
“Thousands of visitors from all over the world will be in the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area for the King of the Hammers events. We encourage everyone to be safe, watch their speed, wear seat belts and helmets and operate vehicles while sober,” Radford said.
The King of the Hammers racing events began Friday, Jan. 27, and will continue through Saturday, Feb. 11. Organizers said 897 teams have entered and tens of thousands of spectators are expected in Johnson Valley.
