Is there a correct side for the fast guys to play on? When I started there NYE of Y2K, I was informed there was a buggy side, and a family side.  The buggy side was where the fast cars would go up and down, playing, drag racing etc. and that side was the one to the north, or the right as you’re facing the hill. The family side was the easier side to go up to the south. The fast guys were not supposed to play on the south side since there were beginners, kids, and slower vehicles going up on that side.

Over this past NYE weekend, I saw all kinds of big, fast vehicles getting a run from the bushes, charging the whoops and racing up the hill towards the cut where families and kids were trying to not get killed. There was a pre runner with Shock Talk logos all over it being an absolute menace while there were slower vehicles trying to go up the “easy” side.

What is the conscious? Should the fast cars keep to the right (unless they’re just passing through with a mixed group) or is the hill free game?

It was a more or less well known saying that you came down the left side and went up the right a long long time ago. Later on, you saw the fast buggies and quads further toward the right but there hasn't ever been a hard and fast rule. Remember. It's the desert and you are responsible to you.

If you show off with a side hill wheelie with a rear engine car on a busy weekend, you will get chased down and ass beat!!

I went momma bear on this bhole a bunch of years ago; he came way too close to the kids I was escorting down the hill on the far left side.

It’s a give and take .  You have to be smarter that the cut off exhaust and Radio Shack speakers blasting distorted crap.

It too bad these bholes usually hurt good people trying to do the right thing.

I’m a Monday through Thursday guy, staying away from mall, flats, sand hwy, usually play in the south dunes along the closed signs.

Just my 2cents.

I’m in a buggy that can easily play on the “buggy side.”  I pass by the hill on rides to catch a glimpse of the poo show, I don’t go to be a part of it. What I’d like to not see, is a big, fast vehicle hauling ass up the left side and taking out a kid or a family in a 4 seat 1000 without a turbo.

I'm in agreeance with you. The skilled drivers and high hp cars used to always stay to the right. The left was for smaller quads, Jeeps, and trucks etc.

Can we talk about parking at the top of the hill? or save that for another topic? :legit:

Not at all at the top of the hill? Or are some places, which aren’t in a well traveled line, ok?

Doesn’t matter anymore with all the idiots who just think they can park across the whole top of the hill leaving just a small area to go through.

I never approach or leave the area going up or down olds anymore too many close calls.

It’s subjective, personally I wouldn’t attend an NHRA drag racing event and set up my lawn chairs at the end of the drag strip. You can be 100% right in where you choose to kick back and still be involved in an “accident.”

In my street bike days I rode assuming every vehicle I encountered was on a mission to take me out, I assume the same when pulling up to watch the show at the drags, swing set, Olds, China Wall…

It always USED to be, the left side was for coming back down. Trucks and slower vehicles would sometimes take it to get to the top.

Middle was for big lines and racing.  Right side for haul ass quads and rails to show what they got.

Very few would park at the top and they made sure not to block the action.

Now.  Bubbleheads have flooded the top and the "thing" is to launch your SxS off the top and race down to show off for a social media clip that no once cares about unless you yard sale.

It's crazy that Comp Hill was locked down on Thanksgiving 2002, has it been that long? :ex:

I'm sure the BLM have talked about what to do at Olds to address some of the issues...who knows.

I haven't gone up that hill on a weekend in years, in fact I purposely head east first when leaving, even when we are going to Gecko.

It’s a free for all. For better or worse.

Would it be better for there to be designated sides? Maybe. Problem is you’d have to inform EVERYONE and also get cooperation, which would only come via force.

Enter at your own risk and look before you leap.

i like the term wheel chair ramp for the left side of the hill. buggies need to stay on the right side which is more fun anyway. never made sense to me why a big hp long travel car would choose to take the "easy way"

I've seen 2 deaths on Oldsmobile that involved buggies, both time they went up the right and turned left over the elbow and struck a quad one time, the other was MX.

Best to avoid going up the hill when the sand cars are there to boogie IMO.
