I'm an idiot and I'm at least marginally sorry

Hey-yo - long time, first timer here with some stupid questions the old site might have answered, but I'm too lame to search, boo me. I'm trying to take my wife and daughter out to tool around and try to explain the fanaticism I used to have in the late 90s and early 00s that they never got to take part in. Go ahead and yell "use the search noob" if that's a thing people still do, but...

Can I just roll out and cruise easy routes in a street vehicle (04 GX470)? Do I need more than a whip and a day pass, and can I still get the day pass from a kiosk off Gecko? Can someone point me toward a thread (or threads) to let me know how the dunes have changed in the last 20 years?

whip and a pass all you need beach store has passes also and a few of the other vendors

You can have a blast in the GX (Darn, one year away from VVT-I and the 5 speed). Sand highway runs along the 86 and will take you to Oldsmobile hill. Comp hill is still there but nothing like what it used to be. Duning in the flats along gecko and the aqueduct will be fun too. Plan on dropping your tire pressure and having a way to air up. The dunes are still the dunes. Tons of side by sides and lots of new drivers that may or may not be paying attention.

Thanks guys! Fireball - yeah, I know, was more looking for a daily for my daughter when her  ZJ gave out than anything else. I was there for the demise of Comp and the transition to Olds being the day/night gathering aside from the Gecko drags. Obviously the need to flat tires is a thing too. Much appreciated for the responses, my apologies if it means I rejoin your ranks!

I have a pass that is valid for Friday that you are welcome to. I could leave it under a rock at the begining of gecko road if you want it so you wouldnt need to spend 35 bucks for 1 day....... Let me know

1,  Air down

2. have the pass and a whip

3. what @Fireballsocal said.....around 3 pm   you could head over to the drags and watch the chit show !

:poule:

Thanks again Poule for the offer! Unfortunately Friday was spent in the ER with a tonsil infection for my daughter (nothing serious, but it kinda ruined our weekend). I still appreciate everyone's advice, going to pre-purchase a pass for a couple weeks out and try again...

No worries / Hope you get to go soon!!!!

Welcome back  :pimp:  Don't worry about not googling the old site, it got sucked into a black hole and is no more   No kiosks at all anymore... and the old wash road is on the train side of the "new" snow fence, new wash road on the west side of it. Like they said above, you can get'm at the beach store but they are $50 for the weekly pass there (on site) and $35 off site. When you head out most gas stations in nearby towns will sell the weekly and annual permit. Richard H said there's air at the ranger station on gecko, on the dirty side of town you can find air behind the beach store and at Gilmore's in vendor row.

On the bright side, most of where you are going to end up in a street vehicle now has cell coverage and if you need a hand out there rolling solo hit the book of faces, drop a pin, and ask for help.

Sorry in advance for the hit-and-run responses, but chit's changed and now I'm selling a bunch of houses in Blythe (wanna buy one? hit me up!) and will be passing through the motherland time and again for the next few months. Home base will be up closer to Walters Camp while handling business, but whatever. Anyone got recommendations for on-site UTV rentals in the dunes? Rates/reputations seem to be all over the board and I've honestly never rented anything before except for a weekend a few months ago in Pismo where Mrs.PSD spent an entire 4 hours cackling her head off as I tooled an underpowered Can-Am through some of the weakest and most heavily-tracked dunes I've ever seen. If she had that much fun there, I'm betting on getting a go card to waste the $70K or so it'll take to get me back in business once she sees real sand...wait, maybe I shouldn't say that because those of you who know me know what an arsehole I generally am. Oh well, eff it, hit send.

Pimp Shack!

Everything is pretty much the same.  Except everyone drives a SxS, they break down and wreck A LOT and people now show-off by driving DOWN Olds.

There's also a new thing thing called Sunset Hill where you go to post social media pictures every afternoon.

Lol reading this post.  Those thermal receipts that faded on your dash and the log jam created by the pass machines.
