Thanks! Will shoot some more grease in and order more clamps when I get back from this trip.IMO the grease looks a little thin. I would want more in mine. Also at Pacific Customs they have narrow worm drive clamps that work great, and can be re-used.
Rolled Edge Porsche 930 Cv Axle Boot Clamp For Ac501112B-930, Ac501113Bb-930, Or Ac501114Ob-930 (pacificcustoms.com)
This^TBH if it was me and it was a new to me, I could tear them all down, clean and inspect and then add brand new grease for a peace of mind.
Thanks for the tip!Add grease until it pushes out the star.
Do this will suspension at full droop so the cup gets filled.
what do you use to drill the holes? I tried installing one in a cv for a buddy and I got about 3/4 into the cv body and it smoked every drill bit i tried. They weren't cheap bits either, brand new ones from Kimball MidwestPut a grease zerk in the CV, and make it easy to grease them,
Thanks for the suggestion. The car is new to me and this is my first trip out with it. All the CV’s were suppose to be new and all greased up. I am finding half truths. Just hoping this car will make it the rest of the week then I will service the CV’s this winter (my off season).TBH if it was me and it was a new to me, I could tear them all down, clean and inspect and then add brand new grease for a peace of mind.
We do them in our CNC machine, or Rob Mac on his prerunner, did them in a water jet, what do you use to drill the holes? I just used my drill press as I did not drill any hardened material.what do you use to drill the holes?
I would just service them to be safe. Save yourself from having a headache in the sand. Jeff (LRS) told me something along time ago that has stuck with me ever since buying my car. " Its always easier to do it in the garage then out in the sand"Thanks for the suggestion. The car is new to me and this is my first trip out with it. If the CV needs more grease, then it is time to disassemble and prep. Continuing to add grease will only make it build up in the boot and cause the boot to come off the CV. Better to do it right and not have a problem on your trip vs fixing it in the dunes. Just my 2 cents. How do you undo or remove this kind of clamp without damaging the boot? I want to check the CV and or add grease and do have a spare narrow gear drive clamp.
That sounds like excellent advise. The CV’s were suppose to be new. I’ll be more prepared next year. The grease I added has helped but I can see how the zerk modified housing would have saved me hours and several curse words. They just need to last two more days. Famous last words.I would just service them to be safe. Save yourself from having a headache in the sand. Jeff (LRS) told me something along time ago that has stuck with me ever since buying my car. Its a nice peace of mind to know that everything is fresh and your not guessing.
Thanks for the advise. I’m at the dunes now and just trying to make it last another two days without disassembling the CV’s. Probably not the right way to go about it but I will remove everything and prep them correctly once I get back home.If the CV needs more grease, then it is time to disassemble and prep.
