Ok, this might be long winded. My grandmother is in assisted living and isn't doing great so the family wants to sell her house and houseboat. I have the opportunity to buy the houseboat (around 14x60' I think) for about $95k. It's on a lake in GA, and I spent most of my summers growing up at the lake on that boat so it's extremely sentimental to me, the rest of the family doesn't care. I live north of Denver so it wouldn't be very usable for me in GA. I've looked at moving it to Bullfrog on Powell as it's only 7ish hours away but that distance seems pretty expensive ($30kish) and the dock fees seem a little high. So here's my questions:

Does that seem to be a decent price for that type boat?

Has anyone shipped a large boat long distance, does that sound about right on price?

What I've found says that I could not rent the boat as an Airbnb type rental to offset dock fees, only the marinas can, is this true?

Are there any other lakes that may be more favorable without driving a crazy distance?

The more I look, the more it seems like I can't take this on, but I want to do all the research I can before making a decision either way. I absolutely love this boat but it might just not be feasible. I know a lot of you spend summers on the lakes and rivers west of me so I value your opinions and advice.

I would join riverdaves and ask the same questions.  You will get allot of valued information on stuff like this.

I have owned a Houseboat on Powell for years, not right now though.

My advice is sell the houseboat and repurchase one on Powell if you want one there.

You can't rent a houseboat on Powell to others at all, Park Service does not allow it.  Concessionaire like Aramark has their own rental fleet that can be rented, crazy expensive, imho.

If you are only going to use the boat periodically, buy into a Shared Ownership, way cheaper and you most likely won't have to deal with most the headaches.

If you are a family, Powell is by far the best family experience ever, right with Glamis.

If I don't buy this boat I probably won't buy one, this one just means a lot to me and meant a lot to my grandparents so I wanted to keep it in the family. I'll check out River Dave's, but it's looking more and more like this might not work out financially/logistically.

14' wide requires oversize permits, pilot cars, and in some states a police escort. Not to mention the beating it will take bouncing along I-40.

It would be a shame to turn those fond memories into an ongoing money pit where you’re watching resources evaporate in a marina 7 hours away.

Hang a picture of the boat & Grams on your wall & keep the memories without the headache.

One of the few ways this makes sense is getting 5 families to go in on the boat and do your own timeshare.

*I’m an old bag of deek that yells at children to get off my lawn, take my opinion for what it’s worth.*

Yea, you guys are right, as much as I want to make this happen it just doesn't make sense. I've known that from the start but wanted to make it work out. Thank you all for your opinions and advice, I really do appreciate it.

It is more like 8 hours to Powell.  Depending on how many females are in the car...maybe more like 10.  You could leave it on the water 6 months out of the year.  There are storage lots there.  You call them up, and they'll have your boat in the water when you get there (for small boats).  They'd park your boat for you and put it in the water for you.  They'll do the same for a big boat.

Grand lake may be big enough, and Dillon may be big enough.   Blue Mesa is big enough (biggest in CO), and only 3-4 hours away for you.  Flaming Gorge is big enough, I think, but not really any closer.  All of those lakes are cold, and some of em are real cold.

Lake Pueblo?  I've been there, but I don't remember it.

I agree....you are talking some serious change to move a boat from Georgia.  Unless you are really attached to the place, it is not worth it.
