Ford Zetec Engine

My neighbor is a stock car racer.  His daughter is the fastest one out there (just ask him).  Well, she banged the heck outa one of their Escorts and it is totalled.  He has a 1988cc Ford Zetec motor that I can get in to for cheap.  It also has the accessories...ECM, fuel, etc.  

I am not a Ford guy, therefore I am only mildly, if at all, interested.  It has also seen a few races (RPM) and not sure how fresh it is.  I am leaning towards something that size, or smaller...like the Camry that I have w/a blow headgasket (3FE, 2000cc 16b dohc), but that would mean scrapping the car. I have driven it coast-to-coast several times.

I want to put it against a swingaxle trans.

DOHC Zetec is okay. Can you get the ECU to run standalone though?
