ford diesel repair recommendations in oceanside area?

my son has a 2002 f-250 with the 7.3 diesel motor and the oil pan is known for rusting out and leaking on them.and well he went out to work and sure enough he had a monster puddle of oil on the ground.and as easy as it sounds to just replace the pan the cross member is so close to the pan on the 7.3 diesel the motor has to be unbolted and lifted up about  6 to 8 " to drop the pan.he lives on base on Camp Pendleton and the truck has a 6'' lift and sits on 35'' tires.do him doing this in the parking lot is not really a option.if anybody can help us out and recommend somebody or a shop that is good and fair would be appreciated.

 
Did he reach out to the marines that work on the diesels on the base? My neighbors son was down there and almost all of them did side jobs.

He used to be diesel mechanic at the old Drew Ford in La Mesa. He does side work and his prices are more than fair. If anything, it’s worth a text or call.

There used to be a shop on base that the marines could "rent a stall" and work on their stuff.

Is it rusted through? I haven't heard of that happening, although, I'm sure it's possible. The dipstick provision in the passenger side of the oil pan is a big problem with those. It has an o-ring on the inside that goes bad. The only solution is to remove the oil pan and that requires the engine to be removed. Lifting it up high enough to get the pan off just isn't possible. The other option that works pretty well but is still a bit of a job and requires some skill is to cut the bottom of the oil pan off to gain access to the inside and then weld it back in place.

so on the east coast with salt and snow thay are known for rusting out.and its so common that's what most of the shops do is lift the motor up enough to remove the pan.i have not done it but its allover on the diesel forum's and that's what my to diesel shops do around here.thay even both said its 1,600  parts and labor and takes about 2 to 3 hours.

spoke to a woman on the phone there.she said thay have lifted the motor and have done it but not enough to give me a price.shes gonna get material prices and ball park the labor with her main guy and call me back.

Anytime I've had to actually remove a 7.3 oil pan I've always opted to just pull the engine because there's no gasket. It's just silicone on the oil pan so I always felt it would be more difficult to get a proper seal because of that so I would just sell a complete reseal (oil pan, oil cooler, front and rear crankshaft seals), oil pump and check and likely replace main and rod bearings and maybe even a complete overhaul. It's quite a bit more money but it pays off in the long run to get another 300k out of the engine

you sure its not the dipstick, that is a huge known issue on these

there are much easier options! Mine wasnt leaking but I replaced it anyways with this

I am aware of those. I installed one once for a customer. They're pricey and require dropping the original dipstick adapter into the oil pan permanently. A lot of people don't like that idea. If things don't go your way you also drop the old o-ring into the pan to clog the pickup. Luckily I didn't but I have heard of it happening. 

If the original adapter isn't ruined from being overtightened it is possible to just replace the o-ring.

Cutting the bottom of the pan off and welding it back in place is actually a pretty easy job with a good mig.

He just has a leak in the oil pan… not looking for a full overhaul 😜
