A Jimmy Stewart movie series special is on tonight.  One of the movies is Flight of the Phoenix.  It was filmed at Buttercup....narry an ATV or Buggy track in sight....very interesting to see the dunes from a dif angle.

I found the 1965 and 2004 versions on Amazon Prime this morning.

I remember years ago there was a bunch of old movie sets left in the Buttercup area. DON~~~

Channel 22-1 "Movies!" (Off antenna).

"March or Die", I think that is the name, or "Beau Geste", in B&W was.filmed there, I think.

Ive often wondered, why was the gravel road built to Buttercup....which barely remains.

Before the overpass to Buttercup it was hard to get there. DON~~~

Before the overpass....you went to the rest area and turned around.

I meant the remnant that you see going to the valley from the front.

About 1980...When they were filming Return/Revenge of the Jedi.  They had the sand-barge built/set at the SE corner of Buttercup.  They had a "Camp" set up out there.  I had/have a friend that worked delivering 5 gallon bottles of water.  He would go to the set 1st thing in the morning, then go run his route, then refill the truck, and make another delivery last thing in the day.

They had the road graded.  They would suck water outa the canal, and then water the road, it was quite passable.

He was getting, if I remember right .84 a bottle for each bottle that he delivered.  He'd load his truck w/a forklift, 2x a day.  He made a bunch of money off that set/camp.  He did it for a few months.  Till they burned the set (I think).

There is actually an Asphalt Road that went into the Valley, you can still find parts of it.  It is South of the current sand highway up on the dune.
