Firebird raceway closing

Yup, it sucks. Beeline long gone, Now Firebird(Wildhorse Pass). Even losing Speedworld was a bummer. I guess Tucson is still going.

To think it was a spur of the moment Winter vacation to see AHRMA races at Firebird that led to us moving to AZ.

At one point they were to build a giant motorsports facility out in Gila Bend, It was going to be a combination of Firebird and Speedworld.. Yeah that fell thru, Also on the drawing board was a dirt oval and some other facility's out at PIR, That to did not materialize. They do have a place in Casa Grande that has a road course that the street bikes have been using for a little bit.  Maybe they can build something down that way.

Canyon Raceway could try to incorporate the airfield to the northeast of them.  It's flat, straight, and nearly a mile long.  HUGE construction project.  ZERO supporting venues, and traffic would make NAPCAR at PIR look like the hotwheels loop track carnage I had as a kid...  BUT, no residences around to complain about noise (yet).

I hope it's not true but I've heard that Canyon is also on the way out.

Canyon was sold a few months back.  This is it last year. We race utv there in December for our last time.

Last year or the year before they said they were going to move it to another location on the same property and make a more efficient Motorsports park.  Iirc it was on their website. But.... things move fast...

I was told it had something to do with it being on Native land. The state did something (can't forget what) to piss them off, so they just said screw it, and are shutting it down.

I remember when they built it.  At that time, Maricopa Road went straight north to the freeway.  It was surrounded by Cotton fields.  My senior year in HS I ran cross-country instead of FB (I wrestled at 145, and weighed 139 at the end of X-C).  We had a meet against Mesa, Tempe, Arcadia...somebody on the east side of the valley and were going home.  ONe of the guys was a little hyper in the back. The coach kicked him out and drove 2 miles down the road and said I'll be waiting for you.  He ran to the van....it took about 10min.  We were not passed by a single car on Maricopa Road.

Probably California's fault  :classic_biggrin:

Constantly happening.  Next generation doesn't really care about cars (in general), and the NIMBYs ruin it for even the places that are popular.  Riverside Raceway, Carlsbad Raceway, Laguna Seca is almost impossible to run at outside of a couple of races a year, same with Pomona (no more Saturday test and tune). People move in next to a race track, then complain about the noise.  Dumb.

While I don't disagree, but there is a lot more money in building houses and commercial properties..........on Indian land, probably another Casino going up  :classic_rolleyes:

Yeah, I guess I should say the beginning of the end is the NIMBYs.  If no one is going to their track because they have to be 5db under the DOT limit, revenue falls and the developer's offer looks more and more appealing.

Laguna Seca Pipe to beat the noise regs:
