If this is covered in another thread please post the link. I tried searching but could not find anything.

What is the difference between an E box and a 2D? Which one is stronger? Are parts going to be more or less plentiful for either?   How much more or less would you value a car if it had a E box vs a 2D or 2D vs an E box? Application would be a 2 seater with a 3.5 honda. Thanks

E box from what I was told is type one internals with the 10" ring gear.  2d is the 10" ring gear but with the heaver bus gear stack and internals in them, basically. 2d is worth more value than an e box imo.

Clips from the transaxle thread here... very valuable thread if not the most valuable on the site. Thank you @Sean@Weddle and I'm just trying to save you some time here.

Also, for what I know to tell the E box apart from the 2d is in the rear mount flange to case if both sides of that case flange are about an inch thick, it's a 2d. If the side of the case towards nose cone is slim flange its an E-box.

Mendeola Transaxles (Off-road transaxle line procured by Weddle Industries in 2013):

The Mendeola transaxle was one of the first transaxles produced that could handle V8 power in larger, heavier buggy's in the late 1990's. These were designed off of VW transaxles and use a variety of VW shift mechanism parts, but most notably the small, weak reverse gear.

The MD2D is the most commonly used model and can typically handle around 400 HP at the crank, with no larger than 35" tall tires. These have a 10" R&P to eliminate the weak link of the VW transaxle, and have wider 2nd/3rd gears to handle the extra power. These typically have a 23-spline "G50" input shaft, but early models have a smaller VW spline input. Weak links will be reverse gear, and mainshaft bearing that will require frequent replacement before failure.

The MD4E was an "Economy" based transaxle designed to use a Type 1 gearset and front housing, mated with the larger 10" R&P to handle a bit more power and larger tires than the VW trans. These are limited by a smaller input shaft with VW splines and a non-Weddle made 10" 5.14 R&P. These look identical to the MD2D trans from the outside to an untrained eye.

Will all the gears on a 091 six rib bus type 1 if they're weddle parts go into mendiola's D-2 case what all would you need thanks

Or what case would be easiest to transfer to that is stronger than stock thanks

No, 091 and 2D gears are not the same, with the exception of 4th gear which is an 091 gear.

A MD4E will use Type 1/002 gearset. the MD2D uses it's own 1st-3rd gear (wider than VW gears). Also info from Sean

Edited to add this:

The MD4E will someday go obsolete. The cost to make those parts are just as much as a 2D part, so it is no longer an "economical" price point.

the only truly specific MD4E components are the R&P and input shaft, everything else is common between VW and 2D.

We still have plenty of 5.14 Gleason R&P sets on the shelf to last for a few years at the current rate of sales.

We are somewhat ok on input shafts for now. Again, based on current sales rate, we should have them for the next few years.

Once we run out of those parts, then you will need to convert to a 2D once you burn up a R&P, or break and input shaft.

Nothing to worry about until that time comes. Keep running them and save your money for the conversion once it's required.
