Hey there. I have some fairly new sand tires unlimited #2's. Is comp cutting the tires worth it? Anybody have a set can articulate the difference? thanks

I'm certainly not a tire expert, but the way I understand it, Comp cutting removes weight by taking more rubber off the tire between the paddles. This does 2 things. First it lightens the tire for competition. Reduction in the mass increases its ability to spin more quickly. Second it will make the scoop on the paddle a little talled allowing it to grab more sand. In my opinion it's not worth anything unless youre racing because the tires have so little rubber on the tire they will start showing cords with little run time.

As a side point....a Sprint.Car racer told me that rotational mass counts 2 for 1 against sprung weight.

IOW....if you removed 8 oz from each tire, it.would count as if you lightened ur frame by 2#.

My guess is that you have better stuff to spend ur money on.

AND ur tires will be less durable.

Weight loss equals less rotational mass equals easier on everything.
Few guys in my group have done it and say they can tell a difference.

For sure the tire gets thinner and more prone to punctures. I guess if you have it done, you better bring a spare paddle.

I ran comp cut paddles on a sand car for years. They are substantially lighter than a standard paddle. I never had an issue with punctures or cuts. The cord is what provides the strength/puncture resistance and not the rubber. On my tires the cord was visible when brand new and I wore down the paddles long before the cords. IMO, unsprung weight reduction and its positive effects on your suspension is the biggest advantage of having a lightweight tire. I would call STU and get their recommendation. Good people there that are more than willing to help.

You have seen in camp what happens with the other Pro R, he was putting air in his comp cuts every morning. Now he did put the sealant in it, so maybe it wont be an issue going forward, just have to see. You dont need to lighten those tires, just turn the boost up!

light car / small motor it will make a big difference, heavy car big motor not so much

So comp cut to take weight off tire, then add sealant in the tire…..
