I'm having my S4 freshened up.

Tranny has one of the first 08ish big bell housing on it running a centered iron single disc in it for 9 trouble-free seasons.

I'm being told the new clutch needs to be an 8" triple disc because of the"big little bell housing".

Any ideas on what this means or opinions on what should be run?

Pressure plate stages?

The motor is an Ls2 being stroked (402 or 408).

9" dual disc and a stage 3 pressure plate should fit.

Why were you being told a triple disc is needed?

Big bell housing meaning the LS housing? You can fit the larger clutch. I run a dual disk Weddle 10.25" clutch and it's butter with my 402" stroker LS2.

Yes, big bell housing.

I don't know why, but for some reason, it sounds like the inside is not the same as the newer ones?

9'' dual disc,  the 8'' is weaker and crack between the pads

If you have the big bell housing you should have a standard GM starter that bolts to the engine block. You can run the 'full size' GM clutch. @Sean@Weddlecan answer in more detail.

It has the IMI 101n on it.

I planned on calling Sean tomorrow.

Thanks

That's not what I have, but thanks.
I was showing a picture of what a full size GM style bell housing looks like in comparison to your bell housing just for reference.  :peace:

I know and appreciate it.

Wish that was what I had.

Tony called me this morning. After a little digging on my end, I am 90% sure this bell housing will take the standard KEP 8" or 9" twin clutch/flywheel assembly.

The S4D version will only take the special 8" triple, or even specialer 9" twin flywheel that KEP makes, as long as the inner bell housing was machined for the 9" clearance.

i wonder how hard it would be to upgrade to the full size bell the 11.25 inch clutches are really nice pedal feel
New bell housings are slightly longer than these early ones, so it pushed the engine back a little. Trans mounts are the same, but need to make new motor mounts and hope all your electrical and plumbing can make the extra stretch.
