2010 5.3 Chevy 1500.  Noticed motor oil around the bottom of the engine.  Appears to be coming from an area just about the oil filter.  Anyone familiar with something like this.  Can't visually see where it's coming from.  Minimal leak.  Nothing left on ground where I park but it's very "wet".

Any chance the leak stop additives actually work?

O ring oil pan gasket. Try tightening the oil pan bolts. There is a small gap between the oil pan and rear engine cover that is filled with sealer when assembled. They like to leak from there as well. Only fix that I am aware of is to drop the pan and reseal.  Either way really no issue other than an annoyance. Just keep an eye on it.

mine was oil pan gasket, really not that hard

Have one in same area too trying to figure out where the damn thing is leaking as well. Ends up on filter. At first I thought I’d was on oil cooler adapter wasn’t that.

How about Stop-Leak additives?

Could be oil pan, could be rear cover. Cheap and easy to try first is replace the seal under the oil cooler bypass port cover that is right there above the oil filter. Held in place with the two 10mm head bolts.

Could also be the weird block off plate thing above the filter.

That is the Oil Cooler Plate,  the old style gaskets are the best, can not get them anymore, best is to take it off and use silicone and tighten to 7ft lbs

The best is to power wash it then use a die,  or just replace what it can be to cause the leak

causes

  • Flywheel bolts are through bolts and the incorrect sealant on them
  • Rear main seal,
  • Rear main cover
  • Main Cap Side Bolts
  • Oil Cooler Block Off Plate
  • Oil Pan Gasket
  • Cheap Oil Filter
  • Front Main Seal leaking down the oil pan rail

If the oil pan has been changed before, most do not know how to tighten them so they can crack at the corner bolt at the edge of the oil pan in the rear corner,

If using dye....wash, and then watch it closely, before it goes all over the dern place.

The sealers make the rubber swell.  That is not good in the other places.

That's the oil cooler bypass I was referring to. There is a channel/indent in the cover that allows oil to flow through. Make sure the replacement gasket is not solid unless you want to immediately destroy the engine. I prefer to replace with this since it uses an o-ring instead of the newer leak prone gasket on the stock plate. https://www.amazon.com/Whip-Billet-Plate-Engines-Proudly/dp/B08S326YYY/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1ZTQE0A6J7KU5&keywords=ls+oil+cooler+bypass&qid=1695669179&sprefix=ls+oil+coo%2Caps%2C136&sr=8-3
