Has anybody got any experience with a Toyota 33-FE or 5S-FE engine in a rail.  They were used in Camrys, RAV4s, Celiecas and MR2s.  They are a 16v 4 cylinder and came as 2.0s and later as a 2.2.

They are supposedly one of the best motors Toyota has made.

Kennedy makes an adapter for them.

They start at 125HP @ 5,400 and about 140# of Tq at 4,400.

Hey @WLD_OTZ didn't you have a Toyota motor like these listed? In yore sand rail?

I had a 4AG-E engine in my rail. 115HP, 93 ft lbs torque. It was a screamer, but you have to have the RPMs up because torque was so low. Bus trans is what it needed for the low R&P gearing.

Heavy and low output NA.

They are one of the most reliable motors Toyota has ever made...

But while reliability is important, this is a toy, not a commuter. They're also almost all old enough to buy beer without ID...

If you must Toyota it, better off with one of the V6s or throwing boost at it.  Honda's J35 is equally reliable, lighter, more plentiful and more powerful.

I ran a toyota 4AG-ZE supercharged 1600 in my car.  Ran it with a T3 turbo at 18 psi ran like a raped ape above 4500 rpm.  No torque down low thats why i put the supercharger back on.  With the SC it ran very close to my later swapped nissan 3.0L V6.  Its for sale if your interested. Would sell with turbo set up also.  Cheap $800 with complete set up.  Motor, adaptor, turbo stuff, computer.

I'm not sure why you would not run a ecotec if your looking for a 4 banger. More power, reliable, and more important, they are used in a bunch of different motorsports applications already.  so the aftermarket parts are plentiful ....

He might have a line on one of those motors on the cheap or free...

Old School Duners like to re purpose stuff, for their Sand Rails......well in the old days. Would like to hear more of the plan and why you choose that motor combo, etc.

These threads are always good reading.

Those are great threads, They always start out with the best intentions and the lowest expectations.

I had this old engine I rebuilt as a senior in High School Auto shop and it's been sitting and my buddy has this bad ass sandrail frame that just needed a new engine when he parked it is how it starts...................

It ends with this 6" piece of tubing is all that is left of that frame and the engine is still sitting in the corner of the shop waiting for a perfect project car to put it in.

In between there is a lot of money spent, wrenches thrown and beer drinking though and that is where the fun can be.

I have 2 Camry's now.  I also have a Camry motor w/a blown headgasket.  My kids totaled 3 cars in a year.  I expect the running Camry to be next....any day now.

OH....I also have a Mercury Villager.  The son drives it...it is a re-badged Nissan Quest.  3.0 V6....another good motor.

I have a line on a EcoTech....actually the guy has 2 of em.

I 'd rather run the Toyota as they are possibly more durable.  But, they are 125# heavier, and have 25 less HP than the ECO.

But, I am looking at a desert buggy.  Type 1, maybe even a Swinger...the kind of stuff that you see all the time for 1,000 bucks.  But, it needs a motor.

In about 1977 I asked an auto shop teacher what kind of motor to run.  He said, in the desert 36hp VW, in the dunes, Corvair....That is fairly close to where I am heading.  I don't mean hauling buttocks in the desert, lugging down, then nailing the gas, trails and etc.  The kind of stuff that a SP is better at then a DP... boy did I open a can of worms there.  He was a little behind the times, because a stock 1600 is way better than a 36hp motor, but that was his intent....and pretty good advice.  For a lot of things, a stock VW can be hard to beat...if you like VWs (me, not so much).
