I'm looking at buying a 69 VW from AZ and bringing it into CA.  I know it's exempt from the bi-annual smog, but do I need to get a smog done for title transfer?

No but you will probably have to take it to have a vin verification done.  I did same with a 70 bronco a few years ago

AAA can do some VIN verifications too.  AAA did my flatbed with Utah plates when I swapped it to CA paperwork.

Yep, AAA for the win. Way easier then the DMV. But you have to be a member....

I had to do it when I bought my F250 in Nevada.

thanks for the input folks.

So for sure I dont have to smog it???  not that it matters, but & as it turns out its a 67 not a 69.

Not sure if this applies to your situation but I just went AAA to transfer title (Texas to CA) on a 2018 Raptor and they wanted it weighted on a certified scale. The lady at AAA gave me a list of places who do it.

Tag Stop on Fletcher Pkwy in El Cajon👍

They'll take care of everything  needed (vin verification if needed) yea it's a service that you pay them for but my time is worth more than what they charge (and NO DMV trip)

The 67 is a better bug than the 69 🙂

I totally agree. I have a 69 that I am almost done restoring, wish I had an earlier model.

JBugs.com will be your new friend if you are need of restoration.

Good luck !! Post pics
