Baja Designs LP6's installation on a 392 Jeep!

Well here's my attempt at a tech write up, hope it helps!

My goal was to install Baja Designs LP6's on the front bumper along with my Warn winch and the Mopar winch guard and have them activated with the AUX switch as well as the factory high beams, mission accomplished!

My last jeep had LP4's right on the bumper with the same winch guard, but I like the above setup better!

After brainstorming ideas on where and how to mount the LP6's I decided to order the Baja Designs
SKU: 447659

Being that this kit is for the OEM plastic bumper, it comes with brackets to mount the lights on. I have FOX DSC Remote Reservoir shocks and the winch so it was unclear if these brackets would interfere with anything, but they worked great!

I should have taken better pictures of the bracket installation but they went on exactly like the instructions per Baja Design. The brackets on the outside of the frame slipped nicely between the fox reservoir and the frame with no clearance issue and the fastener was relatively simple to access and tighten. The mounting brackets on the inside of the frame, between the frame and the Warn 10S XD winch that was already installed, fit great with no clearance issues BUT the fastener was nearly impossible to get to! Its debatable if it would have been easier to remove the entire bumper and winch to install these brackets! Being stubborn and not wanting to remove the bumper and winch, I was able to get my fingers between the winch and bracket to get the fasteners installed but getting a wrench on them to tighten them was a different story. I ended up cutting a wrench down to about 3" long and able to get that on the bolt then use a pry bar between the wrench and bumper for leverage to tighten it. End result with the modified wrench and pry bar I am confident the bolts are tight and I did not have to remove anything for the install.

Side note that I was unsure about before ordering based on the Baja Designs instructions- the inner and outer brackets each have two bolt holes where they would attach to the Jeep frame- these are only there to make the brackets universal left to right- there is only one bolt per bracket used to attach to the frame. I was concerned about this because the second bolt hole would have been impossible to get to if it was supposed to be utilized.

Now that the lights were mounted they cleared the grill, winch guard and location looked perfect! To adjust them I used a level on the face of each light vertically and set each light just every so slightly down from level- the bubble just touched the line. For left and right I ran a straight edge across both lights together horizontally and adjusted them where they were perfectly straight ahead. After driving this initial setup was perfect!

Now for the wiring. I wanted them to come on with my factory high beam headlights but be able to be disabled when driving on the street.
I ordered the standard wiring with switch from Baja Design- NOT the upfitter harness- anticipating making my own wiring setup.

End result is with AUX switch 1 activated and factory high beams on, LP6's come on. With AUX switch 1 off, factory high beams work without LP6's. I programmed AUX 1 to be Latching, Key On, and Last State Recall.

AUX switch 3 is powering the amber backlight/driving light portion of the lights. This could have been wired directly to a key on source or the factory DRL circuit but I want to minimize cutting factory wires and I didn't have any other use for the AUX switches so it was easiest just to use that. I did call and confirm with Baja Design that it is ok to leave the LP6 amber backlight on at the same time as the LP6 High beam, if it was wired to the DRL circuit it would be on at the same time too. Honestly the amber backlight is hardly noticeable during the day. I set AUX 3 to Latching, Key on, and Last state recall- I turned it on and now its always on every time I start the Jeep unless I chose to turn it off.

I chose not to utilize the low beam function of the LP6, not sure when or where I would need it and it makes the wiring more complicated as per Baja Design if the low beam and high beam were to be energized at the same time it would damage the lights.

Now for the HOW....

I used the standard relay that came with the LP6's. The ground lead of the relay and the ground leads from each light I hooked right to the ground stud on the passenger fender.

Continued....

The Hot lead from the relay that would normally go to the battery I hooked right to AUX 1 output instead. AUX 1 is a 40 amp circuit and the high beam function of the LP6's only need 20 amp but I wanted to use that switch so I left the provided inline fuse on the hot lead as well. So Jeep AUX 1 is 40 amp circuit protected but there is an inline 20 amp fuse that should trip first. Basically your AUX switch is now switching on or off the main power to the relay instead of using battery power.

Finding the AUX switch wires took me a while! They are tucked way down low between the fender and the fuse box and taped with electrical tape to a harness. There is not enough room to get your hand down in there to cut the tape or even grab the harness and I wasn't even positive I was cutting the right one! In the picture below you can see a cut in the tape, that is the AUX harness you have to dig out and get access to. After multiple little slices with a razor blade making sure to not cut too deep into the wires I finally got the AUX harness free and accessible.

Now the Factory High beam activation. The Trigger wire to the relay that would normally come from the switch provided by Baja Designs I hooked right to the Jeep factory high beam circuit. This only energizes the coil in the relay and tells it to turn on so there is very little amps being drawn to none at all. So perfectly safe IMO to hook right to the factory high beam circuit without issue- I have done this on previous jeeps as well as ram trucks and haven't had a problem yet. It would be great if there was a plug a play pigtail so you didn't have to cut any factory wires but I could not find one, so splicing it is... I would have liked to splice into the passenger headlight since all the wiring is on the passenger side but there was no way to get in there to unplug the passenger headlight on the 392, so I thought maybe remove the grill to access it? Nope, with the light brackets installed you cannot remove the grill and there was NO WAY I was going to get the stubby wrench and pry bar out and remove the brackets I just got installed so.... I went to the driver side headlight. Much easier to get to! Only down side is I had to run the wire along the driver side fender, across the wiper cowl and to the passenger side where the relay was located. I unplugged the headlight harness from the headlight and pulled it up so I could access it.
I don't like cutting factory wires so after peeling back enough tape and wire loom to access the wires I used a razor blade and cut off a section of the wire insulation to expose the wire. Then wrap around the new wire and solder, then used liquid electrical tape- two coats, then wrapped with 3M electrical tape, then re installed factory wire loom and plugged back into headlight.

The driver side High Beam positive wire on my 2024 392 is white with green stripe.

Now the last connection- The amber backlight wire from the LP6 lights to the AUX 3 harness. I soldered all connections and heat shrink followed up with tape. Then secured the relay and inline fuse between fuse panel and passenger fender.

I am super happy with the finished product! The LP6's amaze me at how bright they are plus the looks of them really compliment the front of the jeep especially with the winch and winch guard!

If anyone is wondering like I was "Does the Baja Design brackets for OE Plastic bumper work on the OE steel bumper?" The answer is YES!
