Always surprised/impressed Baja can still happen in today’s world run by insurance companies and hordes of attorneys.

Mexico has a way of making thing happen.  Their biggest hurdle is getting the ranch owners to allow them to race on their property and not messing up the locals roads.

going that fast - whether in a truck, rail or bike while being blinded by dust is the craziest/worst feeling in the world.  I've only experienced it on a bike at 70 or so, but still terrifying.....

When I raced I'd only get nervous when we saw a large crowd on the course or a bunch of photpgaphers.  That usually meant a 'gotcha' was coming up and had drawn a crowd or the photogs.  We'd usually check up a little till we could see the hazard.

Watch out for campfires too. I hit something in Osborne Wash at almost the end of the 1995 Parker 400 that was for sure man made. So not only in Mexico. Luckily it didn't break the car (a 2-1600) but it was pretty exciting. We only had one light working for the whole last lap so I never saw it.
