Are paddles necessary?

Going to Glamis this weekend and was going to put on my paddles. Realized that paddles are way wider then my dirt tires and can’t move car forward enough to get tongue weight.

Can I still dune with all 4 mud tires on my buggy?

There is construction going on at home so just taking buggy off trailer to remove tires is a B and would have to move all kinds of stuff to get a quad to place in front of trailer for weight.

You can't swap the paddles at the dunes?
I see this going on all the time.
Running without paddles causes the “fun factor “ to go way down and the chance of getting stuck to go up.

ANSWER = YES

BUT

Depends on your ability / I have driven with @Joey in his alumicraft with 4 BFgs on MANY dune runs and it was a blast / He is a SOLID duner soo driving ability has a LOT to do with it.

He used to do it all the time and he RIPPED!!!

Your experience has a lot to do with your ability in the sand

:poule:

Ok. I guess I will be moving all my stuff get the paddles on.

Thanks!

Just air down and you should be fine.

Before I bought my Can Am, I duned my buddy's with no paddles at Dumont and it was just fine.

But like @Poule43 said ability plays a roll.  just be aware of where you are and you might have to change up your line a bit.

Either way...Have fun!

I swap tires out there. I cant fit my car in/on any trailer I own. It only takes 20 min to get everything swapped and put away. I also like knowing I have an extra set of tires at camp, should I need them. Duning without sand tires is doable, but never as fun, and way harder on the car.

Depends on the ride. My neighbor who bought my '14 XP1000 2 seater now runs it the way I (learned after smoking 20+ belts).. run the dirt beadlocks at 18psi and keep your momentum up. If it was a turbo like mine, I'd say yes, run paddles, but it does very well with the dirts. I don't think it would add much, maybe 5% for that ride and probably would start smoking belts again.

PS. It's actually an 1111cc after we cracked the engine case on a rock and had it bored.

Done it without paddles just super diggers on a car about your size and a 2275. Aired down went fine speed is your friend.

those who say you can’t need to learn to drive better. Will paddles work better yes but muds will do fine just watch where you stop flat or downhill pointed.

Momentum is your friend when running dirt tires. So is common sense and planning. Don't stop with your car pointing uphill or flat for that matter. I run dirt tires occasionally and I laugh my azz off every time. Lock to lock fun for sure. You definitely have to drive differently than when you are running paddles, more aggressive the better.

I did one trip and it was a ton of fun. The only places I really needed paddles was long steep hills. I was following a big group and had to pull off and find my own lines a few times but was a blast catching back up.

I ran my Monster Manx for a trip on BFG's aired down to 10 psi. Was fun but I did have to watch my lines. Course that was the trip someone broke down at dusk and we had to do a night rescue. That was fun w/o paddles

if your asking that question then you need paddles. you would be fine in the bigger dunes where you can keep your speed up but if you wind up near china wall in some of those areas that have no rythem then you will really have to drive. i been out to the wall with niel ride out photo he was in a rhino 700 with out paddles it was a great time so it can be done an fun

What is your buggy like?  What kinda motor?  What are your mud tires?  How big?

Mud tires are the wrong thing to run in the sand.  They dig in to much.

Around 1980, I had a Pinto engined rail.  I had a few trips under my belt w/Tru-Tracs.  They were my beach tires.  They were made by Armstrong and were 11-15.  I had them on 12" wide rims.  Starting out was an issue, but anything that I hit in 2nd, pulling strong, I would climb w.o any issues.

You'll have a way better time with the paddles. Just swap them out when you get there. I did it for a while before I modified my trailer.

I've ran bighorns aired down and do quite well in the dunes. But my favorite tire for desert trails and crawling was Terrabites and they sucked in the sand. Just dug in and were very hard on the belt. So it depends on what dirt tire you are running.
