I've recently gotten a wild hair to try skateboarding, no idea why, but I can't seem to shake it. I can snowboard pretty well, and wakeboard when I get the chance but have never been successful at attempting to skateboard. Do any of you skateboard or have experience with it? I think through research I should start on a larger cruiser as I'm not really looking for tricks, just riding around, maybe some ollies and bowl riding, but am open to suggestions. Thanks ahead of time, the recent motorcycle post made me decide to ask here.

54 here and have been skating since I was 5.  Still use one cruise around the neighborhood, bomb hills, and hit the occasional pump track / skate park.  Definitely start out with a cruiser board.  Get wrist guards, find an empty parking lot and have fun.  Don't be afraid to suck at first, but keep at it and you'll be fine . . .

Used to back in the 80's-90's....Pipeline Skatepark every Friday after school.

Del Mar Skate ranch a few times same with Mike McGills in Carlsbad, Vans Skatepark in Orange

Built 2 different halfpipes in my backyard. Skated all over with my friends...some who turned pro.

Been to Lance Mountains house a bunch of times.

I miss it big time. I follow a bunch of guys on Instagram just to keep watching it.

Was never really into street skating...

I too think about getting a board and getting back on it, but I'm 52 now.

I still have it all in my head what to do.

The church down the street from me has a small halfpipe. That would be fun, but I'd be that old guy!

:ex:

:lmao:

Amazing how good the "old" guys still are. I see Tony Alva from time to time and dude is over 60 and still skates pools.  Legend.  Salba too !

^ ^ do it but be careful as the mind has a tendency to write checks the body can't cash . . .

Thanks for the advice and laughs guys! I'll watch that video after I get off work, I think I'm old enough to be smart about things (and have insurance) and young enough to still act kind of dumb. I'm arguing with myself whether to get a cheap board because I might not enjoy it or a good board since it might be a better experience and possibly enjoy it more.

I have a friend, female and I believe 52 at the time, that had a Labor Day party years ago.  She remembered skateboarding when she was younger, I can still do it.  Yeah, ended up in the ER with a broken ankle.  But I am not 51 and bought one to try and get my 9 year old into something other than video games.  It comes back pretty quick.

I skated all throughout the '80s and early '90s, thought I would pick it up again for some exercise about 10 years ago and it was fun, but I knew what was going to happen to me. It wasn't like riding a bike again.... I was able to muster up some brutal front side grinds (always loved smacking the curb as hard as I could) and a couple rail slides on the benches! These new skateboards with a tail on each end of the board sucks though!! 😎

You're only as old as you tell yourself.

39 years old here....

I used to skate when I was a kid, and used to use it to commute off the train up until 29 years old. Have kids now, so I picked it back up again sorta... its tougher for sure!  Another dad friend of mine tried to show his kid an ollie, and he broke his hip (literally!!!) when the board slipped out.

I occasionally talk to Mike Mcgill (pro skater) .. hes 58 years old, and just got a knee replacement - I talked to him in the hospital/rehab and he fully expected to skate again no problem... SURE ENOUGH I see him on tony hawks Instagram crushing bowls a week or so ago . So I guess you are NEVER too old. Enjoy it. Just take it easy lol!

Skated all through high school mostly street, my 9 and 6 year old are in to the local skate park both can drop in and ride the bowls. I’m still able to drop in and cruz are the park with them BUT, I recently biffed on a Carver board, was the first time on it. Tried to bomb a hill the front trucks swivel I guess to create a surfing like motion “carve”. Speed wobbles happens instantly with the trucks like that went down and I stiffed arm the asphalt with the plam of my right arm, ended up with radial head fractured. I’m still out of work

STAY AWAY FROM A CARVER BOARD!

Age is just a number, you're only as old as you feel! With that said, some days I'm 18, some days I'm 78. My joints are beat from years of moto/snowboarding/abusive activities, but I try to stay active and actually feel better after riding or hiking or snowboarding (although a little sore) than just going to work or trying to rest.

I’m 38, I still skate. Grew up surfing skating and snowboarding, and still do it all.

You can do it man, have fun. Just watch the small pebbles/rocks, they will get you every time.

here’s a trip to mainland Mexico in January. I kinda still got it

Thanks for the encouragement and motivation guys, I think I might run by the skate shop or try to order a complete today. Hopefully it goes well, and if not, then I scratched an itch and can move on, haha.
