Anyone been through a vehicle buy back through GM? In the early stages and wondering if I could bounce some questions of them?

I did for my 2018 Silverado 2500 HD Duramax!

I had issues before I even made the first payment.

That is the key...when did the issues start that brought you to it being a lemon or possible buy back.

The formula is as follows: Mileage Offset = (Purchase price of vehicle) x (Number of miles driven at first repair attempt ÷ 120,000 miles)1. The mileage offset is calculated by multiplying the purchase price by the mileage at the first warranty repair attempt for the problem that rendered it a lemon, and dividing this amount by 120,000 (which in California, is the average life expectancy of a vehicle)4.

So for me the issues start 425 miles after I bought the vehicle. Now, I didn't know that was going to be an ongoing issue but it happened 6 times and they couldn't figure it out. Plus a bunch of other stuff that happened.

So for me: $77,000 x 425 = 32,725,000. Now divide that by 120,000 and you get the amount you subract from your original purchase price.

For me all that was to be deducted was, $272.00 Basically...give me all my money back since the issue started to early into me owning the vehicle.

It took almost 2 years though. So, you have to be patient. Luckily, I could still drive my truck even thought I felt like I was driving on borrowed time since every time I turned around it was back in the shop for something.

GM Lemon Law dept screwed me around for 6 months, then I contacted Timothy Fatone in Orange County. He took care of everything. It was another 14 months.

But in the end, I basically drove my truck for 5 1/2 years for free. I got back everything.

That is super helpful! In feb of 222, we bought our 22 Yukon and within the first 5K miles it started having issues with the screen/radio. Too lengthy to type but it went back about 5 different times in less than two years.

About 6 months ago the "Add engine oil" notice came on the dash. Immediately took it in and it was low but they claimed it was the oil pan leaking, but we fought that because there was never a drop on the ground and no sign of any leaks.

Fast forward to last week it came on again. Took it in for an oil change and they said they will do an oil consumption test.

I called GM on Monday and asked about a buy back and today they told me they approved it.

Not sure next steps once I give them the green light.

@dbart did they fight you the whole way? Does it seem strange they approved it so fast?

GM was trying to state that my problems started at 33K miles when the whole ECU went out. I had all the paperwork showing the Low Coolant issue right from the start.

They wouldn't call me back, I finally got someone and asked to talk to a supervisor and they lady said, "He doesn't TAKE calls, he makes calls!"

I was like Oh really...yeah OK and hung up and called Tim Fatone!

He took care of everything.

You got lucky on the oil consumption.

Years ago...when I was still wrenching with Honda, the "acceptable" consumption rate per Honda was 1qt per 1k miles.  Yah, nuts.  Even more nuts when you consider that the typical Civic a the time only held 3.5qt and the oil change interval for EXTEME conditions was 3750 miles.  If you didn't check it, it would be OK to burn ALL of the oil prior to an oil change being due.  Granted, this was NEVER an issue, but is was in the documentation.....

Weird you mention radio and oil issues….
This  is on my company truck, and we basically get a new one every 2 years or so. 2021 Chevy 1500 crew cab Silverado . The radio will sometime be completely dark when I start it and be on a different station, set at one volume . The controls don’t function and you can’t lower volume or change the station…..it goes away after being shut off and restarted a few times.  Also had the low oil warning after driving 2000 miles after an oil change…..sometimes it is almost 2 quarts low.  Never an oil leak either.

the truck is now at 98k miles and I’m due for another one in the next couple months and this one will go to auction, I’m assuming.
