Looking at a 2014 F150 with ecoboost power. 4x4 with 33” tires. Give it to me straight.
Good

Bad

Ugly

Don’t want to tell the miles on it so I get honest opinions.

Thanks.

Depending on the mileage I would do some reading about the cost of replacing the timing chain, just so your aware before purchasing. Some people have different ‘comfort’ levels of what they want to spend to maintain a used vehicle.

I had one and the only issue with it was cam phasers(rattled but never had mechanical issues). one of my employees has the same truck with 150k on it and it runs strong. The older truck with the 6spd is better than the new ones with the 10spd IMO. I had Ford lemon law my 10spd

Our company has one with the 10spd, CC 4wd.  I think it has about 100k on it.  I've never driven the 6spd, but the 10 seemed to work fine for us.  Scoots along pretty well.

2014 is a good year for the Ecoboost.   Spark plugs were the main issue at around 75,000 miles.  That year has the 6 speed transmission which was solid.  Fuel mileage is decent when not towing.   I towed my 24' toyhauler with my first two F150s.    Do you know what gearing is in the truck?  What is the mileage?

I have owned 4 different F150s with the Ecoboost motors.  Of all the trucks my first had a spark plug go bad at 75,000 miles and My last one was a 2018 with over 100,000 miles that needed the cam phaser replaced due to a rattle upon start up (known issue).  Ford helped pay for part of the repairs.   Otherwise all of them were just the usual maintenance stuff.

Only real thing to look at on a 2014 is the intake ports will eventually clog up since there isn't port injection to clean the chit out.  6 speeds are stout.  Cam phasers might be a problem (it will rattle on cold start when they start to die).

My buddy has one and has had a share of issues with it. I'm pretty sure it's a 14'. Some turbo components that lost all boost on the road, and some coolant leak at the turbo? Something like that. I thought it was a hell of a truck but I'm Cheby guy 😆 so don't know much. He still owns it after all the issues so it can't be too bad. As long as you don't think that it's going to do F-250 type work, like most people that own them do, you should be fine. I cringe when I see one pulling some serious loads. Eek! Not for me. Good luck!

I have had a 2013 and now a 2019.  The 2013 is still running strong, my son has it.  No big issues, currently has 150k miles on it.  The 2019 only has 45k miles on t, zero issues.  Cam phasers are known and covered under warranty, but I don't think were a problem back in 2014, only newer trucks?  I have towed my 24' box around loaded with both trucks, both did fine.

My next door neighbor has a 2018 with the Ecoboost, probably has 115k miles on it, 95% freeway and that thing runs like a top!

Only issue he said he's had was both catalytic converters started to go at different times but was still drivable...just a code was thrown. They were both replaced.

His is a company truck but it is his only means of transportation...he drives a lot.

Thanks for all the feedback. Truck is a one owner 14 F150 with 140k miles and he claims maintenance has been top priority.
This is the one thing I have read about this motor is oil change every 5k.
It would not tow, just a basic daily for around town.

Turbos would be my concern with 140K miles.

So I bought the truck, really clean and drives great. But,

Code P0630 vehicle not programmed.
2014 F150 3.5.  Turned truck off Friday night with no light, started Saturday morning and had check engine light before driving it. Drove it about 120 miles and still running great. I have found it might have something to do with bigger tires, I have 315 (35’s). The previous owner said this size tire has been on it since 2018. What is the fix?  The scanner code reader would not clear it. Can an off road warehouse type place clear this for me or where should I take it in San Diego?

Did the previous owner have a programmer or program installed in the pcm? Maybe they put it back to stock and the file got corrupted.

So I searched on Google a bit and it sure sounds like the tire size is the culprit. It may have had a tune and it went bad or it needs one to be recalibrated like a hyper tech. When I re-geared my truck, same big tires the shop sold me that tuner thingy to get my shift points and speedometer back to actual. I used Pro Gear in Kearny Mesa. I would call them with your issue and see if they're familiar with that problem. I can bet they are. Good luck!

Good call on Pro Gear, I have been there before with my 1 ton.

Thanks.

You can download ForScan and get the OBD Connector to your computer and change the tire size in the program. Also has a few cool other features you can change in it as well.

If the truck has fog lights you can turn them on when the high beams are on and a few other items can be changed

Went and talked to the guys at Pro Gear in Kearny Mesa (San Diego). Great group of guys, if you need gearing, axels anything drive train go there. They recommended getting a super chips flashcal. It’s not a tuner but a calibration tool. It lets you set tire size, gear ratio and several other things that I have not played with yet. It gets your speedo correct and makes your mpg, miles to empty more correct and corrects shift points. Checks for codes and clears them.  Program your tire size 2” smaller, I have 35’s and set it to 33”.
$250 shipped in two days.

That's great and all, but did they say it will solve your problem? I do love those guys tho.
